Incredible business once more 12:38 - Aug 30 with 6046 views | Keaneish | Anyone questioning the signing of Celina needs their head read. We now have two quality players In every attacking position competing for a position - this is really healthy and nothing but. Although I’m in no doubt we’ve now tipped the scales on wages compared to last season if we hadn’t before, the amount of quality we’ve been able to attract because of our management staff on top of heightened salaries is exceptional. Now, sort the leaky defence out with a commanding keeper like Walton, a fit Edmunson and hopefully a skipper in Morsy to compliment that midfield.

I think I've got OCD about squads. Our squad for our final game vs Fleetwood: Bennetts, Bishop, Chambers, Cornell, Dobra, Downes, Dozzell, Drinan, G Edwards, Harrop, Hawkins, Holy, Huws, Jackson, Judge, Lankester, Kenlock, Matheson, McGuinness, Ndaba, Nolan, Norwood, Nsiala, Parrott, Sears, Skuse, Thomas, Vincent-Young, Ward, Wilson and Woolfenden. That's 31 (29 outfield), excluding the likes of El Mizouni, Gibbs, McGavin, Nydam and Simpson. Our current squad: Aluko, Barry, Bonne, Burgess, Burns, Chaplin, Donacien, Edmundson, K Edwards, Carroll, Coulson, El Mizouni, Evans, Fraser, Harper, Hladky, Holy, Jackson, Kenlock, Nolan, Norwood, Nsiala, Penney, Pigott, Vincent-Young, Walton and Woolfenden I've excluded Dobra as it looks like he's off to Colchester. That's 27 players (24 outfield) which includes Kenlock, who Cook has no interest in, and El Mizouni who I'll be amazed if we don't try and get a loan deal for. We might bring in a couple more players - another target in Morsy's position and Celina - but if we try to sell/loan Kenlock and El Mizouni we'll be back to 24 again, five less than at the end of last season. Name one player outside of the 22 that should be in it, that won't be because of our 'bloated' squad.

Chaplin, Barry, Aluko, Burns, and Edwards have all been brought in to primarily play as wide forwards in Cook's favoured 4-2-3-1. A couple of them may be options as a ten as well, as will Celina, but however you slice it we are beyond well stocked in that area of the pitch already.

Yeah, there's not much in it, really. If you look at the players who were consistently around the first team last season, we had: GK: Holy, Cornell (2) FB: Vincent-Young, Ward, Kenlock (3) CB: McGuinness, Chambers, Wilson, Woolfenden, Nsiala (5) CM: Skuse, Nolan, Bishop, Downes, Dozzell, Huws (at a push), McGavin (at a push) (7) AM: Edwards, Lankester, Bennetts, Judge, Dobra, Harrop (6) FW: Jackson, Norwood, Sears, Drinan, Hawkins, Parrott (6) Total - 29 This season, we're looking at: GK: Hladky, Walton (2) FB: Vincent-Young, Penney, Coulson, Donacien (4) CB: Edmundson, Burgess, Woolfenden, Nsiala (4) CM: Evans, Harper, Nolan, Carroll (4) AM: Burns, Chaplin, Barry, Edwards, Fraser, Celina, Aluko (7) FW: Norwood, Bonne, Pigott, Jackson (at a push) (4) Total - 25 So this season's squad is a little smaller, but there were probably more bit-part players last season. Edit: Or much as pointofblue said. [Post edited 30 Aug 2021 15:28]

Ndaba was on loan at Ayr last year? Not sure he can be included as a first team player. Matheson and Thomas weren't at the club at that point either, in fact they pretty much never were under Cook. And we're talking about still adding two more to this season's squad as well.

I see and agree when all are fit But just going by how it is now Chaplin, injured Barry, young and unsure of him Aluko. nowhere near fit burns, needs op edwards.. can't do it all on his own. It's a good mix, and one that will come good, but it's painful whilst we wait

If we're including McGavin from last season then arguably El Miz and Humphreys should be included in this year's. You've left out Aluko from this year's squad too. Plus we're looking at bringing in Morsy. There's likely to end up being very little in it in terms of numbers and I see it creating some of the same headaches that Cook himself identified when he first came in.

I couldn't recall when we bailed out on Matheson and Thomas - I think offically they were still ours until the end of the season as loan deals cannot be terminated outside the transfer window. Overlooked Ndaba. So even still, that's 26 outfield players compared to 24 now. And, as I said, we're more than likely going to (try and) move Kenlock and El Mizouni so it'll be a case of two in, two out. Certainly I don't think Cook has any interest in keeping them happy.

Yes, my intention was to agree with you, essentially. Forgot Aluko. I mention that including McGavin was dubious, but he was in the matchday 18 in the league on six occasions. I don't think we'll be seeing El Miz or Humphreys in the 18 again for a while.

So depending on what happens with the likes of El Miz and Kenlock (who won't be registered even if he's still here I'm sure) we're basically at a point of having a similarly large squad, with only a player or two in it. Bear in mind also that last season's squad includes four players that joined in January, so the squad is bigger now than it was at this time last season. It just feels to me that it goes against what Cook was saying when he came in, and I don't know how he keeps all these players happy. Let's hope he can manage it.

The other thread has suggested we had 31 players last season. With Dobra going, we're already down to 23 with another day to go. That's a fairly significant decrease, is it not?

*Sigh* If you include goalies from last season but not this season and include players who played 15 minutes of football last season whilst excluding players who have played more than that already from this season's squad, then yes you can make it look like this season's squad is much smaller. Quite why you'd want to do that I'm not sure but there we go.

What relevance do minutes played already have to do with it if said player has already moved on? You've included El Miz in that 24, he's not played in the league yet. Cook said he wants to work with a smaller squad & that will be the case.

I guess I kind of see where you're coming from but which new signings would you say is surplus to requirements if Celina and a Morsy type comes in? Aluko and Barry are the two who stand out to me but otherwise I can see the point to each of the others. I suppose arguably we could have gone with Walton and Holy as our keepers rather than Walton and Hladky.

Aluko and Barry are the obvious two. If Morsy comes in I'd question why we signed three other CMs who would all be expecting to be regulars, as four into two just doesn't go.

It's fairly reasonable to expect 2 players for each position. If you get 2 injuries in cm and have just 3, what do you do?

I guess this is the issue we have - do we sign players who will all fight for first team slots or have a clear first and second XI? If the latter, then it's fine when things are going well but the drop in quality will be clearer should we suffer from injuries, suspension or loss of form. We're actually a mix of both fighting for first team slots versus a clear XI, I suppose - defensively there appears to be more obvious definitiion (KVY/Edmundson/Burgess/Coulson v Donacien/Nsiala/Woolfenden/Penney) but in midfield and attack we have more players expecting game time.

The only people knocking them are those who are a little bit against Cook and desperate for another stick to whack him with. If Cook had done nothing and we'd been needing some flair on a wing or more solidity still from the keeper, they'd be the first complaining. |
