But they’ve had very similar anti immigration policy impact from the Trump era.

It's part of the problem, assuming you believe the haulage industry who are the ones managing the problem. Covid we can't do anything about, but voluntarily restricting the pool of available drivers (by our choices around Brexit and then refusing to issue exceptional visas) is purely self-inflicted.

Beer shortages at Wetherspoons on 12:08 - Sep 1 with 1821 views | Texaco73 | The Kool aid is strong in this island. I always thought the only way for people to actually see the error of the type of brexit that has been forced upon the country was for it to be physically demonstrated. Perhaps it'll just take a little longer and a very difficult Christmas to persuade people that a hard brexit is an idealogical wet dream for the benefit of extreme capitalists only. When faced with realities the idealogy comes up short. There will be squirming and wriggling but ultimately there are years of mess ahead of us to stabilse and move forward and eventually we will rejoin various joint EU projects and sign up to standards paying for the privilage without any recourse to influence. Ms Patel has already splashed 50million to the French to help control channel crossing migrants. On it will go..

25,000 HGV drivers didn't return from their EU 'homes' after Jan 1st according to the spokesperson for that industry. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

RHA say there is a shortage of 100,000 HGV drivers. You quote a source saying 25,000 EU drivers didn’t return to UK after 1st January. Brexit has clearly contributed for a quarter of the shortage. Covid has had a big impact on HGV training 30,000 HGV tests were lost last year. The impact of Covid is higher than that of Brexit. [Post edited 1 Sep 2021 13:23]

But one of those was definitely self-inflicted: Brexit. And the other was exacerbated by the way that the Government mishandled various stages of the Covid crisis, in comparison with another country that has control of its own borders, New Zealand.

New Zealand are also short of HGV drivers - your political bias is clouding your judgement methinks.

New Zealand also made it clear no-one was coming in for the last 15 months. Might be the issue there. Theirs was due to Covid, ours is a perfect storm of Covid and Brexit, the latter making it so unwelcoming or difficult for HGV drivers to work here.

And you also have a shortage of bar staff. An issue where Tim Martin asked the Govt last month to relax the new rules to allow EU staff to come here, which he fought to get put in place through Brexit.

I'd rather have their problems than ours right now. But a Google search reveals that this is an issue which successive NZ Governments have sought to address through their Visa programme since at least 2015- so that is about the demographics of NZ. A little bit of research would have saved you pulling the trigger so quickly. But keep on defending the indefensible!

The RHA have to shoulder some of the blame. The average age of lorry drivers has been over 50 for a number of years. They need to make it a career more suitable to the younger generation. There are loads of countries with the same problem and if it is made into a political battle it will never be solved. Brexit and Covid certainly have not helped but are far from being the only issues, in spite of several on here trying to convince us otherwise.

When you have a known issue (eg NHS staff shortages leading to reliance on recruiting nurses from EU countries) then you don't make it worse by sabotaging your solution. Most problems are complex and multi-faceted. That doesn't mean that a huge self-inflicted wound making something worse can't be pointed out as being a big part of the problem. It's funny that it's having an impact on Tim Wetherspoon, though.

The government need to scrap the ridiculous CPC training. Basically you have to do 40 hours , spread over five days, of sitting there listening to someone telling you how to do your job. The bits you didn't know you forget within a week. The courses are online and our instructor said he didn't care what we did as long as he could see us. You could tell most people were watching TV. Waste of time and money.
