remember, to anyone under the age of 20 a person over 40 is a boomer the problem we currently have is an economy based on personal debt, underpinned by rising house prices - one that would collapse (as in 1990)almost overnight were interest rates to rise it is maintained by a rigged market - one which would be broken up were it to involve any other commodity, ie keeping supply well below demand it is becoming an ever more precarious market as more and ore who would be entering the market are priced out but the good news is history has taught us that no bubble ever bursts.....of course not

That mad right winger Boris Johnson is at it again lads on 19:51 - Sep 8 by HARRY10 | One of the causes of a growing rightwing is as a reaction to more tolerance and equality in society in general. It is not too difficult to foster a sense of 'them' taking stuff from you (see Germant 1930s and the Jews) For the UK it is EU workers taking jobs .... which UK workers are all too often unable to take. For the US it is the fear that 'non whites' are taking over Whilst it might be difficult for normal folk to grasp how some are so easily fooled and controlled, it should be seen in the context of some being subjected to decades of subtle propaganda. The EU has consistently been portrayed as a malign force that has attempted to ban Xmas, forced the UK to ban hedgehog flavoured crisps and stop white children from eating conkers. Any of these absurd claims never stand more than a few seconds of scrutiny, yet are routinely regurgitated by the easily led. The question which follows, is how much of this is nature and how much nurture. Why were so many easily able to see through the lies of Johnson, Farage, Rees-Mogg etc and so many were taken in ? |
"Eating conkers"??? | |

The boomer generation get a ton of hate but they could only play the hand they were dealt. Any generation would collectively look out for their own interest. We're so obsessed with the boomers. Two recent generations had a world war to deal with. The boomers got the financial boom. Millennials like me (I despise the tag) have advantages that they didn't have. The next generation have advantages my generation didn't have. Each generation has to play the hand it has been dealt. Full disclaimer: I own a property where the deposit was paid with family silver so maybe I have no right to say what I've said, but I do believe it's true. I'm a little tired of the relentless attacks on the boomers. We have advantages they could not even dream of.

Growing up with the internet. A device in our pockets with instant access to information. Advances in healthcare. Advances in communications. The ability for flexible working (Millennials now quitting rather than returning to the office). There are plenty. Some are things we take for granted like advances in healthcare etc because every generation gets that.

Him talking about the UK State and NHS becoming so intertwined / labour losing battles but winning the long term war because of it. He seems to feel like the right has lost.

His brand of ultra-free market lunacy may have lost but not sure that’s been in vogue since the 80s. Still way too much neoliberalist influence of course. But this guy is off the scale.

Yeah, having read him over the years, I think he's about as neoliberal as they come. Or if there is a more extreme version of him, I shudder at the thought.

I don't really count "we've got more technology" as meaning we can't criticise a generation for things like having access to free higher education and then removing that, or making sure that house prices are propped up to a point where the disparity between them and the average wage is ludicrous.

There's a big difference between criticising and the post I replied to. Just my opinion.

Silly. Cleary broad stroke black and white opinions are all you can handle. As above. Most technology based but lumping the internet in with tech advances feels like trying too hard to maintain the current anti boomer opinion. If you could magically move yourself in time, and put yourself back however many generations it would be so you were the age you are right now but in the boomer generation's time, would you? Everything about your life that can be the same is the same. Would you do it?

Seems to be some confusion here. I am not claiming we have it better than them. Just that some things are massively better. Take the last 5-6 generations. Millennials would probably rank about mid table. We have not faced a world war. We have some big advantages as well as some things which are not good.

But successive generations used to have it better, now they look like having it worse. That seems a pretty retrograde step when we now know a lot more about well-being, society and well, almost everything. Almost as if we’ve turned our back on that and disenfranchised a generation to suit those who’ve accumulated the wealth and power.
