Starmer certainly lied in his leadership campaign. We’ve got to be consistent here. This stuff matters.

Of course Boris lies to the country, habitually and on actual government activity/policies so of course there’s a real effect. Starmer pledged a continuation of a radical and progressive policy platform, promised to deliver party unity and maintain the internal party democracy and transparency. Instead, we’ve seen a shift further right than Brown and a new set of “principles” nowhere near his “pledges”. On his watch, we’ve seen a full-on factional war launched by the Labour right to sideline members and local parties, while an authoritarian top-down control has been put in place. And he’s now tried to stitch up future leadership and MP nominations so that the members have less and less say. That’s on the big stuff. Then there’s the continuous deception and hypocrisy on day-to-day politics and party management. From tolerating islamophobia, transphobia and antisemitism from the “right” people to playing political “5D chess” to avoid taking a proper and consistent stance on almost every issue. Of course, people can say that’s only in Labour and not the real world. But difficult to talk about honesty, integrity, democratic principles and a lack of corruption/cronyism when you exhibit exactly the same tendencies within the scope of your own power. Anyone expecting better politics and higher public standards from this shower (although their sheer incompetence means they’ll screw up way before government is a likelihood) is fooling themselves. There’s that old Groucho Marx joke, “Those are my principles. And if you don’t like them ... well, I’ve got others”. Literally, as we’ve seen, that seems to be this lot’s credo. And in practical terms how is that any different from Boris’s MO? [Post edited 27 Sep 2021 7:38]

Ah Traingate ... those were happier times before we realised how that sort of devious nonsense would be repeated and ramped up to keep the status quo/Tories in power. And top marks to the media for doing their job in all this.

The biggest Corbyn lie in my book was that he cared so much about intra-party democracy, but ignored party members views on brexit. By sitting on the fence, he played politics rather than listen to his party members. A total and fundamental betrayal.

Eh? It was only by listening to party members, the PLP and Starmer himself that the second vote compromise came about. I thought at the time, and still do, that it was a fair compromise to find a way out. But by then the well had been poisoned so it was seen as Corbyn sitting on the fence. Or even more ridiculously, people claimed that they just couldn’t understand what the position was. But a lie?!! Is that the best you’ve got?

About 70-80% of labour members were against brexit. The party should always have been anti brexit from the very beginning, but never was. Forget later shenanigans.

It was never as simple as that. As the Red Wall is showing. It’s also one of the reasons that once he became leader, Starmer has almost completely avoided any talk of Brexit let alone pushing to rejoin.

are you for real? you think corbyn's never lied?! wake up. he's gone. stop enabling the tories, fight for a better government and then put pressure on to move further left as your beloved corbyn did in the blair government. time to grow up, getting rid of boris is far more important than boring student intra-party politics

If you can’t give an answer that’s fine. And I’m sure Corbyn is economical with the truth/slants his views a certain way like everyone else. But we’re talking a different level of untrustworthiness and lack of integrity with Boris that Starmer is uncomfortably close to.

The irony that yeah, it’s me that goes on about Starmer all the time (or Corbyn for that matter). You used to start threads every day over a couple of years, at length. Often multiple threads. And on a side note, where were the centrist chin-strokers and tone police then? The ones saying it’s about getting the Tories out? Oh that’s right, you were joining in. I make no apology for thinking this stuff is kinda important given what we’ve seen over the last decade or so and where we’re heading. Just spare me the hypocrisy and double standards.

I think you're over-stating the case. Do you really believe that, in seeking to achieve a Labour government, Starmer's motivation is to bolster his own ego and/or line the pockets of his friends, allies and party donors?

i can give hundreds of answers, as can anyone with access to the internet and without your one-eyed hagiographic filter do you want to continue to enable the tory government or help bring in something better? i'd rather have one year of even a weak watered down progressive government than 100 years of corbyn/foot's fundamentalist socialism in perpetual opposition to genuinely dangerous people like boris. the reality of the choice is stark. get on the right side

I wouldn’t say that’s Starmer’s motivation. Or certainly not his driving force. But yeah, there are elements of that and for those around him and of Labour right MPs of shoring up the left side of the establishment and getting paid. Look what happened to the Change UK lot, plus John Mann, Ian Austin and Tom Watson. Pretty clear that we’re not talking heartfelt progressives here by and large.

Starmer.... on 19:05 - Sep 26 by Timefliesbyintheblue | bigoted adjective obstinately or unreasonably attached to a belief, opinion, or faction, in particular prejudiced against or antagonistic towards a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group. Now the way you frequently name call and verbally abuse those with differing views to your own BB, suggests that this adjective which you use to describe Boris Johnson, could suitably describe yourself could it not? |
Ah, the old 'if you hate bigots and bullies that makes you one' fallacy that thickos like to trot out to justify their support for bigots.

Pretty much all of it. I think you’re wanting to go down the same path as the Tories just a little slower and less dangerously. But we need a change/reversal of the direction. IMO. And to be honest, I think your specific arguments and your ire are best left for LibDem supporters.
