I bet Rafiq didn't see it as "friendly & good natured banter", although I accept that it was probably ignorance from the perpetrators, rather than ill intent.

There's a certain amount of irony attached to this statement given the Tory Party's own issues with Islamophobia I note the media are conspicuous by their absence on the Tories issues here, something they were keen to jump all over Corbyn on

They are so out of touch! Apparently Rafiq called someone a Zimbo and the report states if it had been reported he would have been disciplined for it no mention of any disciplinary action for all the racial slurs against him. Current chairman ( appointed after this all happened ) wanted to release the report and deal with it but was not supported by the board he is now contemplating his position and Yorkshire are ready to appoint Colin Graves ex ECB chairman and in a real you couldn’t make this up the former chairman of Yorkshire who was chairman when this all happened. Rafiq appearance at the Select committee will be fascinating as it’s covered by parliamentary privilege so he can name names and no one can be sued for libel.

I'm genuinely worried about who the names may be, given that the cover up is so deep on this. Regardless, the truth must out and Rafiq must be supported. Currently the stench from this clings to EVERY Yorkshire player, including some very prominent England players, as well as the management and board, so it is also only fair to the players who didn't indulge in the racist abuse that the suspicion is lifted from them.

I think I read a senior player admitted to regularly using the slur but did indeed consider it banter.... quite how one can convince oneself that is the case is beyond me

The ECB does need to take strong action here. It sends a message and at the moment the wrong one. When you consider the no of people in this county who come from a South Asain background, who maybe grew up watching cricket, love the game, the next Moeen, the Next Rashid they are surely thinking is this an organisation I want to represent? Must be off putting to them entering the game. That goes for Yorkshire especially, there is a big south Asian population for them to draw from, large pool of potential talent right on their doorstep, would you want to play for Yorksn after this? I wouldn't. Axeman Rafiq is I think a Yorkshirman himself and to be subjected to that at his home county is just terrible. There was also the incident when Essex won the County title of a Muslim player getting soaked in Champagne which I suspect was more about lack or awareness rather than outright racism but still underlines then need for much greater awareness

As the ECB saw the need to suspend Ollie Robinson for foolish tweets sent when he was a teenager, it's hard to see this episode being ignored, but we are talking out the ECB!

Thing is, I worry that if the "senior player" is named, the story becomes about them and them alone, letting YCCC to sweep it's handling of this under the carpet. I think the player should 100% be punished. I mean you have to if stuff like the quote below is even vaguely true: "The player also admitted to telling other people "don't talk to him [Rafiq], he's a P**i", asking "is that your uncle?" when they saw bearded Asian men and saying "does your dad own those?" in reference to corner shops. Despite admitting recalling that Rafiq broke down in tears at one point, the player insisted he had no idea he was causing offence and would have stopped if Rafiq had asked." The issue is far more serious and far bigger now than any one player making comments. There is a coverup with the board and management of YCCC complicit, which shouldn't be allowed to drop out of the lime light because the "Senior Player" has been named. If Rafiq is naming names and telling all, I'd be more interested in the board members and their part in this now.

Many County Cricket Clubs are run in a very old-fashioned and not particularly fit for purpose way. While they appoint Chief Executives (many of whom are very good) to run the commercial side, the Boards can be a throw-back to days gone by and old ways of doing things. So many institutions revert to "damp it down, let's not make a fuss" as a response to crises, and seek to close down discussion of, or investigation into, genuine problems, whether it be regarding safeguarding and allegations of child abuse, or bullying by management, or, in this case, racism. It's a misguided reflex action to attempt to lessen reputational damage, which ignores the duty of care towards survivors of abuse, or whistle blowers who seek to support them, sometimes with tragic results, and almost invariably ends up with greater reputational damage in the long run. Chillingly it also creates an environment in which abusers become more brazen, believing that they can act with impunity. See also Met Police and failings to properly investigate the man who sunsequently murdered Sarah Everard, the BBC and 70s DJs etc etc etc. Pressure needs to be brought swiftly by the Parliamentary Committee, preferably with an independent inquiry.

It gets even worse - according to the Torygraph - "Rafiq’s spokesperson has since pointed out that the law firm which oversaw the investigation - Squire Patton Boggs - was a former employer of Yorkshire chairman Roger Hutton. Rafiq had expected the investigation and panel’s report to be completed last Christmas." https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cricket/2021/11/03/former-england-star-gary-ballance Whilst the absence of Tests at Headingley would certainly hit YCCC very badly, ie in the pocket, that penalty would also unfortunately hit hundreds of thousands of cricket-loving Yorkshire people very badly :(
