"995 deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending 5 November mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
This is the highest number since the week to 12 March during the 2021 national lockdown, when 1,501 coronavirus deaths were registered."
All deaths now above average excess deaths for last 5 years too.

I’m not sure the majority of us could cope with a other lockdown though. As much as some of you want it, a lockdown now after the vaccines have been given to the majority, suggests there’s never going to be any way to beat covid and every Winter will be in lockdown for the rest of our lives. |  |

Small point of order - we never had a lockdown in the UK.
We had varying degrees of restrictions. |
We got pretty close with the first one, but yeah following that things weren't anywhere as strict as they have been in some other places.
Is the answer more restrictions? Yeah, it probably is if we don't want the deaths. Social distancing seems to have gone out of the window for starters and it's relatively easy to do. Same with mask wearing. Trouble is, the governments have abdicated responsibility to 'the people' and we as a group don't give a sh*t about the deaths, as long as we can go to the footie and our zumba and origami evening classes.
It'd be interesting to see what would have happened had we tried to put some restriction in place through the autumn, rather than go for herd immunity via infections through our children approach. I wonder what impact that would have had, had we done everything we would to restrict infections in schools while still getting the kids in (class bubbles, class quarantine and masks, social distancing, etc). Or even daily testing. |  |

Can't see past the paywall, but from the headline it's pretty obvious they're cherry picking a point in time. I'm assuming they're talking about the stringency index developed by Oxford Uni researchers. The FT has a useful little tool (as opposed to the useless little tool they sacked, badum tish!) you can use to see how countries have compared.
You can scroll through and see our lag back in March/April 20 compared to other countries around us. Jan & Feb (when that telegraph article was written) we were in the top category, so then yes we had relatively strict controls. For the rest of the time though we've been relatively light touch compared to many other places, even as cases rocketed in the late summer & autumn this year.

In much of Spain people weren't even allowed outside to exercise for the first lockdown - imagine not being able to let your kids outside! How was our situation worse than that? | | | |
