Was reading an article in NYT recently seems that take up is lower in German speaking areas of Europe not just Austria. Article didn’t offer an explanation for this.

Because German words are so long German speakers are still reading about it?

Just a guess.

Out of interest, what are your views on surgeons being forced to wear PPE while carrying out operations? Or motor vehicles having to pass an MOT test? Or wearing of seatbelts being compulsory?

I would say those examples are different - you don't have to be a surgeon or drive a car.

I imagine that in Austria, there'll be a campaign of non-payment of fines and assuming that holds, the govt will have to decide whether to lock thousands for non-payment or let it go.

You don't have to live in Austria if you don't like the rules.

True to a degree, but only in the extreme. Has any democratic country ever affectively kicked citizens out for any reason?

There are lots of things that are compulsory that government deems necessary for the betterment of the individual and wider society though. Many a cold, wet morning I didn't want to go to school but I still had to. And there's this weird amount that's taken from my pay packet for some strange reason?

Those are the prices you pay for living in a society. If people don't like these rules, I'm not sure there's a madly libertarian country where they can just do as they wish for reasons... And I wonder why that would be.

I do see your point, but this feels different to tax and schooling and tbh, a little fascist. As Rrrory says above, it also sets a dangerous precedent - would you want Boris with his finger on the trigger of what goes in your body?

Without wanting to be too glib, people are better off with the vaccine going into their bodies than they are with C19.

I'm really struggling to see the reasoning behind not having a vaccine for a virus that practically shut the world economy for months and killed millions.

The covid vaccines are proven to be safe and effective, so again, really struggle with why anyone wouldn't have them.

Yes, if the overwhelming evidence supported him.

How will this be enforced? Fines, followed by prison.? Camps? Forced injection? Will the refusinics be hunted down?

Sounds as if it could turn into something like a dystopian science fiction movie ...

I agree with that 100%.

Its the being forced to take *anything* bit I'm uncomfortable with. This could lead to serious societal strife over there and after all govts govern only with the consent of the citizens or do so, in free countries at least. If that falls part because of onerous demands (I'm thinking the Poll tax here) then that country could end up in a far worse place. Far better to educate and address vaccine hesitancy than to demand. It just feels like a very authoritarian move to me and despite agreeing with the feeling behind it, I find it scary tbh.

Exactly. It's pretty worrying, despite the good motives. But, it is for the good of society....(!) ... real ethics essay stuff.

That's totally different. It bans people from doing something. This is making people do something which some just will not do.

They're not being 'forced' and it isn't 'anything'.

If they don't want to take a medically proven vaccine for a killer virus then they're free to leave.

Thinking about it, I think this may breach the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - either to the right to own property (your own body) or freedom of thought.

I actually feel it won't happen. The threat may well be enough to get the vaccination rate to an acceptable level.

I do feel that the protests we have seen around the world so far will be nothing compared to what may be coming.

That's probably the crux of our disagreement then - I would say that a refuser is being forced to take a vaccine on pain of fine or being made country-less and no kind of real choice.

All choices have consequences, and in this case I can see no positive reason to refuse the vaccine.

But aye, let's agree to disagree on this one.

Of course your statement is correct but they are making a choice. The Mandate gives them no choice ...

Totally different scenario.
