"I think we will be in the Play-Offs" a question.... 08:16 - Nov 23 with 3394 viewsblueboyd

for those who think we will, and I certainly don't - what have you seen this season to make you think that? - 6 wins, 6 draws, 6 losses. - that isn't play-off form so I am curious why you think we will get there.

Other than optimism of being a town fan which for a part I can understand, I don't see it at all.

That would make it an unusual season. About two-thirds of recent seasons it would be enough and most of the rest only a couple of points outside tge top six.

We are likely to continue improving as the squad knits closer together. Those above can only slip up.

I'd be surprised if it's as few as 73 for 6th place this season. I hope we improve further still but at this point I wouldn't say it's a certainty.

21 points from every 12 games from the /start/ of the season is likely to get you in the playoffs (80 points over the season). But I don't think that ratio from the Lincoln game onwards would get us in the playoffs.

As I posted yesterday, 21 points from 12 games is 1.75 points per game. Now I am content to accept the cherry picking of arbitrarily taking the cut off straight after Bolton. But 1.75 points per game for the rest of the season would leave us on 73 points. I really don't see that as enough this season, given how the sides above us are doing. One third of the league is currently doing enough to head for more than 73 points. We are not amongst them.

So are you saying that 73 points will be enough, or are you saying that we will improve from the 12 games you cite?

... do you think if we get to the 1st Jan and we're 6/7 points off play-offs, having played most of our promotion rivals in a condensed period, with a bigger squad and incoming Jan transfers.. you'd be optimistic of Play-offs?

I'm not convinced we will mind... we're playing Rotherham and Charlton at completely the wrong time... and I can see six points dropped there for strarters!

The longterm build becomes more challenging the longer we stay at this level. The longterm aim isn't to get out of League 1, it's to get us back to the Prem. Trying to build a squad capable of that whilst still stuck in League 1 is not really feasible. We'll likely see a fair turnover in the squad again this summer if we don't go up.

Agree with the initial point to an extent but I dont think a complete turnover would happen. Most of these players are contracted to 2-3 years at least and even if a couple of players did decide they wanted to leave, we would be in a much better position than we were 6 months ago.

Of course promotion should still be the target this season and anything else would be a failure, but theres still an awful lot of football to be played.

There is no way the likes of Bonne, Cellina, Burns, Walton, Morsy(who, lest we forget wanted to stay at boro) and Aluko are staying here if we stay down. And that's just off the top of my head. Additionally, Cook is almost certainly out of a job if this season is a failure.

1) We’re a new team still by most and our form has generally improved. Take those first 6 games away when we were a brand new side, and we’re 4th in the league. That shows improvement. That to me shows that the team is getting there and that it isn’t wild to think our form will continue to improve over the course of the season and will result in us making the top 6.

2) We’re a team that are top scorers in the league. And for good reason. Players like Celina should quite clearly be playing in the league above. Same with Morsy who has improved us hugely. Since he arrived, we’ve look a much more balanced team.

3) The first 8 games, defensively we were an absolute shambles. But compare that to now and it’s chalk and cheese. Edmundson looks far too good for League 1 (Sunderland fans this week have been raving about him as the best defender they’ve seen this season). Even in games where we do concede like Saturday, we’re not conceding dozens of shots per game. 2 shots on target, 2 goals on Saturday. That is the sort of defensive improvement that we had to make after the shambkes of August and September. It’s not a ridiculous belief to think that now the disasters of Bolton etc where we had no defensive shape or idea, are behind us. And that’s likely come from the management as how else will such obvious improvements have occurred.

I've only seen maybe one or two people claim the top 6 is out of reach. It's a tall order though and will require us improving further and sustaining that improvement over the rest of the season. Fingers crossed.

We've got 5 loanees who would be unlikely to stay another year in League 1. The likes of Aluko and Carroll probably wouldn't be retained when their 1 year deals expire as they'll be on a decent wage. Edmundson I could see moving on, Harper too unless he gets more fame time, Piggot may decide being a bench warmer isn't for him as well. Then if the likes of Chaplin and Edwards have a good second half of the season the chances are we'll struggle to persuade them to give us another year at this level. Morsy might want to see if he can chance his arm in the Championship again too. It's really hard to build a quality squad at this level because good players don't want to be playing in this league.

"I think we will be in the Play-Offs" a question.... on 08:49 - Nov 23 by Oldboy

We have Walton in goal. We would be at least 9 points better off if we had him from the start. Edmundson is getting better and either Toto or Burgess need a run of games with him and a solid partnership will be formed. Are full backs are a problem which I am sure Cook is aware of. Our "midfield 5" are starting to gel. Supply to Bonne needs to improve, which it will. Coming up to January, so Cook will bring in the couple needed to take us to the next level. I think top 6 is realistic at this stage, not a pipe dream.
No manager in the history of football has got every signing right first time of asking. Even Fergie got some wrong.
Plenty of games to play and things will get better. Hope that answers some of your doubts.

8 he directly cost at least 1 pt on Saturday.

And the big picture is exactly this. We would be substantially better of for individual errors.

When I watch the highlights I don't see other teams giving so many cheap goals away.

Its actually more galling when we are regularly the better side and then either self destructing or being Sh!thoused out of the result we deserve.

Bonne was 4th choice at QPR. They are doing alright without him. Not sure many Championship clubs would take a gamble on him. If we can afford him, I think he stays. Same with Walton. If he wants regular games, then this is the place for him. I do however think we would struggle to convince him of that. Celina will be gone regardless, don't think we can afford him regardless of what league we are in. Aluko will bite our hands off for another year. Morsy and Burns are under contract to stay. I really do not get this " they will leave if we don't go up" mentality. We have a decent squad, but none of them are world beaters.
Our squad is only going to get stronger from now on, not weaker.

Point 1 isn't correct. Take away the first 6 games and we're 5th but with three sides just behind us who have played fewer games than we have since then, so on a points per game basis we aren't top 6 over that run of better form. Over a 12 game form table we're 7th. Not a million miles away but given we need to be better than the sides we gave a headstart to over our first 6 games it needs further sustained improvement from us.

Because the play offs aren’t finalised in November, there’s still plenty of points to play for (84), things can quickly change and why shouldn’t it be us?

Whilst it's a truism to say that the league's not decided in November, you can do a lot in November(to pick a first half of the season onto at random) to ensure that you're either in them or not in them.

'I really do not get this " they will leave if we don't go up" mentality. We have a decent squad, but none of them are world beaters.'

Morsy is a Championship player, simply. Chaplin too. Celina was in the French top flight last year.

Bonne has banged in 11 goals before December; any 20-goal striker in L1 will attract attention from higher up.

Edmundson, as pointed out elsewhere on this post, is looking too good for this level.

Regardless of our very deep Div 3 pockets, others above have even more resources.

If this season drifts into nothing (and even I'm not so pessimistic as to say it will, yet), why would any of the players above want to stay, irrespective of who the manager is?

The victories against Wycombe, Portsmouth and Doncaster. Achieved in a style that eclipsed anything Lambert produced including those wins at Blackpool and Hull.

We are infuriatingly inconsistent and Cook's tactical intransigence could be his downfall but the guy deserves more time.

Barring a catastrophic implosion in form Cook should get until the end of season. If we fail to make playoffs then it's au revoir.

I'm equally curious how you can fail to see that this squad of players has the talent to make the top six.

Why?

Because good, ambitious players don't stay in the third division any longer than they have to.

Event on the wages we're paying.

Boone, for example, is joint-second leading scorer in the division and has the best conversion and accuracy rates in the division(source: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/league-one/top-scorers).
That's the sort of form that gets you noticed higher up.

And more to the point, he's not our player.

He's young, ambitious and we don't own him. If QPR get an offer, he's off.

The same amount i'd look at last year and the year before that when we were top on each occasion. Nothing is won in November.

We had a terrible start through individual mistakes. We've improved over the last 12 games (5th based on last 12) and still have plenty of room to improve further. Top 2 probably out of reach but play offs more than achievable, despite the flouncing from you and others.
