Paul Cook's assistant widens the gap 20:12 - Nov 27 with 3585 viewsCokeIsKey

Isn't it funny that Leam Richardson's Wigan is taking almost exactly the same path as every previous 'Paul Cook' team, while we're festering in 13th.

Almost like Cook's completely lost without him. Giving a lost manager time won't achieve much.

At first I thought, nah can't be all leam. Afterall PC nurtured him.

But having looked out he Wigan forums and read about the recent 0-2 comebacks etc and displays put in after HT. It really makes you think maybe Leam was the reason.

His only success without Richardson was in the Irish league 10 years ago, which was probably very different to League 1 now. Maybe he had a good group of coaches there or his current tactics just worked.

0?

Sligo rovers finished 6th and won an Irish league Cup. Max capacity of 5k so comparison in league to English? League 2?

Took over Accrington from Leam and kept leam on as assistant. Then left to go to Chesterfield and took leam with him then went to pompy and took leam and then Wigan and took leam

The only thing Paul Cook can do successfully without LR is make a cup of tea.

We have been desperately unlucky to have gotten two managers without their sidekick.

But surely they aren’t the masterminds behind it all?

I’m sure it’s overplayed, at the end of the day for Lambert his assistant and the brains was managing in National League South whilst he was in PL with Stoke!

Whilst Richardson outperforming at same level it’s much worse from outside - sure much more to it, but the plan was clearly to get him here in the summer and we’ve not got anyone of anything like his calibre in management team and that can’t help

We can’t have nice things

Why did Leam have to go and do a good job last season ffs ha.

Odds on Cook getting sacked and then him becoming Richardsons assistant?

I think when a manager has a successful history with the same assistant, it’s always a risk to split them up. Maybe LR was never considered as an assistant at Ipswich, maybe Evans didn’t want the additional cost, whatever. One has to acknowledge the assistant is doing much better so maybe that tells us what we need to know!

Cook wouldn't lower himself. If Richardson is feeling generous he may offer him a consultancy role but it's not like he needs him.

Was mentioned on a KoA pod that after Cook was appointed him and LR were speaking nearly every day and then he signed the new deal with Wigan when they got taken over and they didn’t really speak after that.

Seemed to be expected that he was coming across, or at least working towards it - that he hasn’t has clearly been a big issue

Cook made his name with Sligo Rovers in Ireland before he linked-up with Richardson. And, as per Joe's post, if Culverhouse was such a genius he wouldn't be working at the team 22nd in the National League!

I was told very reliably a fair while before Richardson was named the full-time boss at Wigan that that was going to happen and that Cook was well aware he wasn't going to available to be part of his staff here.

They’re nothing without each other, apart from Richardson, at the minute anyway.

Interesting, wonder whether Cook thought he could talk him round - what was the timing of their takeover?

Not sure in relation to the timing of the takeover but if I remember rightly it was a few weeks before the announcement re Wigan was made. PC was looking around at other candidates for the role, Jeffers among them, although obviously decided on a different job title for him in the end.

He was in charge last year when they started a season with no money and losing all their players so did a good job to steady ship
