Does anyone under 60 watch the Queen's speech? 18:37 - Dec 25 with 6946 viewsnoggin

It really shouldn't but just hearing her elitist voice annoys me. Poor old love had to spend Christmas at Windsor Castle.

I didn't listen so can't comment on the quality of the speech. Clearly you weren't impressed.

TBF it sounded less elitist than usual - but I’m no expert.

I wouldn't have her goldfish-bowl life if you paid me a billion a year.

Don't think she had any choice in the voices she heard around her when a baby & growing up either.

I don't/didn't listen but on a human level it's still a year in which an old lady lost her husband and long-term companion.

I have no problem with her, she was here long before I was, doing her duty and served her country.

No amount of privilege in the world could compensate for her life.

The rest of the mob on the other hand should be stripped of the utterly outdated and ridiculous titles connected with 'Royalty' once her time has passed.

She deserves to go out with a bit of respect and dignity in my opinion.

Then, pay off who's left and cut the ties between State and the whole Royal concept.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against her as a person. Like you say, she hasn't had much choice. It's the whole institution that annoys me.

I can’t believe that at age 57 she has been queen longer than I have been alive. Just think at the time she had become queen, Ipswich hadn’t won the league under Sir Alf, Kennedy was yet to be shot and the Banana Splits were still ten years away - it’s nuts!

Says something that the one that's blown me away the most is the Banana Splits yet to be formed for another decade.

I used to watch that on a Saturday morning and then the Double Deckers.

I had a thing for Tiger. It's ok. I was four too.

To be honest, there really wasn't a lot going on in the speech. So I am surprised it came over as elitist.

Didn't watch but was hoping she'd announce her abdication for the day after the jubilee, I think she deserves to be able to properly retire without Philip.

Also as an act of defiance against the civil service types portrayed as telling her what to do in "The Crown" to decree Wills should replace her, or for full banter Harry.

I don't wholesale disagree, but why go sh*tflinging on Christmas day? Plenty of time for that tomorrow.

It’s the equivalent of saying did anyone watch the NFL tonight? I just can’t get going with the commercialisation of it etc and it’s just Such a poor spectacle……I didn’t watch it though.

Just such a weird mean spirited take when not even watched the speech today

I wouldn't worry too much about it Joe, I'm sure you had a lot more to be happy about and enjoy today than this.

Harry and Meghan asked for privacy & are no longer part of the "firm', so won't appear in official communications any more.

Andrew's been excommunicated from offical comms for obvious reasons.

Most Heads of State in the modern world have a limited time they have to serve. Queenie, bless her, has given up most of her life at a fairly thankless task.Perhaps the whole Monarchy thing can be retired when she passes and we move to a system where the Head of State is decided by something other than accident of birth.

Problem is in finding a decent system to select a decent President (or whatever you'd call them).

Yes you get the occasional royal bad apple, but royals are trained from toddlers to regard duty as primary, over-riding all else in life. Even where they reject it, eg by abdicating, it means serious heart-searching.

What elected President would feel same moral responsibility? How could you guarantee not ending up with populist scumbags elected on 'charisma', like Johnson or Trump? That's the problem.

You beat me to it! I used to have strong republican views but given the choice of a monarch or a President who, in this day and age, is likely to be a populist like the buffoon we currently have as PM I’ll take the former.

The German or Irish model might work but let’s stay as we are.
