Interesting point. Demonisation cuts all ways, and only makes divides worse. Still punching a grey haired women and landing her on her a*se says quite a lot about the "hunt followers".

kicking off in rural Wiltshire on 20:32 - Dec 27 by WD19 | When I go for walks after dark I routinely see far more foxes than I do domestic cats. They are everywhere. A family of three spend most nights messing up my garden. |
Begs the question, which came first, the fox or the garden...

Whether it's grouse, rabbits, pigeons, muntjac, etc. Most Sundays there is a box of something dead on the bar in my local, take your pick. None of them are posh, in fact most of them are the exact opposite. Salt of the earth country boys without two pennies to rub together. I struggle to see why foxes and blokes on horses get all the abuse.....I can only assume it's a class war type thing. Some people are strange. |
Do the blokes on horses eat the fox after 'shooting' it?

kicking off in rural Wiltshire on 21:18 - Dec 27 by Lord_Lucan | Your first sentence is what I was saying - if they were more successful and actually dispatched a few more then it would make more sense. I don't understand the "Toff" angle though, the hunting people I knew were a mixture from builders to land owners and everything in between. It's a bit like assuming all poachers are P*****s. You don't have to be a expert in class or culture to understand that fox hunting is a 'sport' predominantly carried out by 'toffs'. Just because a couple of builders have lost the run of themselves doesn't change that, their are pricks in every class/culture. Where as poaching is carried out by an assorted array of big grinned country folk so would be more then a little strange to link it solely to travellers. If yer gonna stereotype pikey 'sporting' culture I would have gone more for Bare knuckle or sulky racing. Possibly even selling the odd generator that may need a little bit of work or even a slightly over the top wedding/funeral

I don't have strong views either way on shooting either. As you know, when you get to a certain age you will have met people from all walks of life and I know people who hunt and shoot. You wouldn't see pheasants around if it wasn't for shoots, they release so many more than that get shot. However my warehouseman Greggles is heavily involved with a shoot and he told me recently that they shoot so many that they have to burn them after the shoot, I always assumed they all got sold for consumption. It is fairly undeniable that these shooting types do a lot for conservation. Mate of mine went to a stag shoot recently but wasn't involved with the culling, there were loads of them travelled miles and miles to follow the days shoot in landrovers - don't see the point in that at all but each to their own. They have to cull the old, weak and deformed or the whole herd turns to sh1t. Like most things in life, not everything is cut and dried.

No, I'm also saying that.... on 10:32 - Dec 28 by ArnoldMoorhen | Imagine it was some women with candles mourning the violent death at the hands of a serving Police Firearms Officer. Those kind of scenes must be stopped by flooding the area with tooled up riot police. The class system, and it's bedmates patriarchy and misogyny, alive and punching in 2021. |
Given that a huge rural county like North Yorks (3,341 miles2) is so poorly resourced that it sometimes only has one police dog + handler on duty for the entire county, I doubt most rural counties have even one mounted police officer available to go with & follow the pack (which is what it'd take to see exactly what they get up to), let alone the number needed for several hunts holding their traditional Boxing Day Meets at the same time. That hunting is the preserve of "toffs" really is a bit of a myth that's been handed down from the 19th & early 20th Cs. In terms of cost, a day's rate for a hunt is no more than the price of the ticket to a football match, and you can hire a horse for a day if you don't want the year-round cost of owning one. Many members of the general public also follow on foot, bike or by car (*edit - and following on foot, bike or by car is completely free of charge). [Post edited 28 Dec 2021 23:12]

'...they shoot so many that they have to burn them after the shoot.' C**TS, utter C**TS! As for 'having to' cull to old, weak and deformed, perhaps we should do that with humans too? Although some fella had a bash at that in the mid twentieth century, I believe? (I appreciate that you are not presenting your own views here.) [Post edited 28 Dec 2021 14:26]

kicking off in rural Wiltshire on 19:11 - Dec 27 by NthQldITFC | I stood still in the gloom and drizzle last night and watched a beautiful fox walk delicately along the bank near me. It paused when it got my scent then scurried off. A few minutes later I watched a barn owl close up, quartering absolutely silently over a field of stubble. When I see scum on horseback determined to rip beautiful creatures apart for no other reason than the depraved and filthy perversions of their own cold, sad and miserable minds, I know which species I'd prefer to see 'controlled'. |

kicking off in rural Wiltshire on 21:00 - Dec 27 by Lord_Lucan | Actually...... I have never really been pro or anti fox hunting, it really isn't something that i would want to watch or participate in - especially as I hate the countryside. I may have defended their right in the past as I know a couple of huntsman and they used to take it all very seriously. I remember your story about your grandads fields. I spoke to a few people about this at the time and none of them accepted it could be true - unless they all hated your grandad. I think fox hunting would be more acceptable if they actually managed to get a few foxes as from what I have been told they often blank. If the purpose is to rid foxes to prevent them scavenging and destroying farmers livelihoods then I see little point if they often fail. For that reason, on balance I am against it. Anyway, I mentioned stag hunting because I think this is essential in order to cull the old and deformed and I just wondered what your thoughts were on that. For what it's worth I am very much an animal man and get very upset about animal cruelty. [Post edited 27 Dec 2021 21:07]

I've always been rather puzzled as to why an animal's external appearance should make any difference when it comes to the crunch (sorry) tbh. They're all sentient & feel just as much pain, including the rats that are killed in their millions every year. (Just an aside, I know they're pests that carry diseases & it has to be done, but they still suffer, & if despatch is by poison, that can be a slow, lingering death).

Where this happened is only a couple of miles from where I now live. It's worth noting that in the South of the county (Pewsey I think) on the very same day a hunt went ahead with not a single person there to oppose it, and they assembled in the town centre. I'm not a fan of hunting but I am also fairly pragmatic. I think the thing that really grates me is how pompous and self indulgent a hunt is. If there really ever is a need to cull then why does it need to be so glorified all dressed in their matching jackets and celebrated so freely in large numbers. If it truly was purely about natural country requirements to keep a balance etc anyone half decent human would carry it out without the fanfare and joy. But they don't, it is more about them as individuals and hunt groups than any justified requirement. It isn't just what they do, it's how they do it

Why do the clothes grate on you so much? What they wear is just bog-standard 'smart' riding gear, ie same as they'd wear for horse shows, gymkhanas etc.

I'm no fashion expert so it's not the colour or stitch work or anything that I find offensive! I think my point was dressing for an 'event' as your examples support, rather than a begrudging 'necessity'. It becomes a show in it's own right and in my opinion more about the riders and there wants / a jolly day out than any true justification.

When hunting started though, putting on a smart jacket (which is the only difference between normal riding gear & those occasions) was just being respectful to each other, same as you'd put on a smart shirt if going to friends' house. As far as I'm aware, the riders following the hunt didn't ask people to start attending their meets - the public just started going to watch of their own accord.
