....has taken in 1.2 million and into peoples houses too. Imagine how quickly they must have done the biometric processing to check they aren't Putin infiltrators.

I think Michael Gove is working on this and will make an announcement in the next couple of days.

I would imagine it's not that straightforward - there is a risk of nutcase potential murderers and rapists offering shelter and also a risk that whoever you shelter might be a bit of a wrongun and flee with all your jewellery - such I am afraid is a fact of life. There will also be a bit of a communication problem won't there - seeing that it is quite likely your new tenant(s) won't speak English.

I also wonder if your house insurance will remain valid.

It's all a bit of an iceberg.

Hadn't thought of the likes of house insurance. I would be happy to pay a bit more if needs be. I would just like to help someone if I can.
Happy to take my chances with whether I'd end up with someone who wants to rob me. I'm sure the chance of that would be pretty slim. Being married with two young kids I'd like to think the wife and I don't fall under being rapists/murderers! We'd have room for a mother and her child.

Yes, I wasn't trying to put you off and I commend you for what you are proposing.

When faced with situations I always look at potential problems first, it's in my DNA to think like this. It's not based on negativity but realism.

I wish you well with it, keep us updated.

I would like to do similar but it's a massive thing and I am 100% sure that wife Lucan wouldn't be able to do it, she's finding it hard enough with daughter temporarily moving back!

As well as opening their homes to refugees, I saw a clip from a train carrying refugees across Poland. The reporter told how at every station people brought food/sandwiches which were simply passed through windows to those inside the carriages.

Polish schools have already started taking Ukranian children as pupils. I think I heard Moldova has taken in the equivalent of 1 in 10.

Meanwhile, we issued another 270 visas yesterday....

Yeah, I've done a fair amount of work in the last five years helping polish people (amongst others) get jobs for corporations in Poland. I have around 5k connections on LinkedIn, so I've seen a huge number of houses being advertised and shared.

I'm currently helping someone with Ukrainian family move from Czechia to Canada too. They've currently got 8 people in a two bed, and won't sell their place until things resolve positively. They arrived in Czechia with no issues from the Czech authorities.

Yeah I thought you may only be thinking out loud. I had thought of the likes of the person they might be. Fleeing a war zone I'm sure they'd be a nervous wreck more than anything. Will keep posted if anything happens. I'm sure it will be made hard as possible by the powers that be!

Basically the EU are concerned that the Polish government had comprised the independence of their judiciary. This has been going on for some time and Poland may well be in the wrong. I don’t know enough about it.

It’s the timing I find quite bizarre. No self awareness at all by the EU.

In what way have they compromised it.

Genuinely don't understand.

They have been demoting or relocating judges who have been critical of the government.

It's a bit more impressive than that as they have taken in 2 million between 2014 and the start of this second invasion.... so that 3.5 million in just over seven years.

If you recal nobody over here batted an eyelid when Putin started this invasion - and refugee crisis - in 2014, but the Ples clearly did.

The odd thing is that those of the Brexit voting generation, the Poles loathed Ukranians for their welcoming of the Nazis in 1941.... now they are the best of neighbours.

lso worth remembering that about 25% of Poland suddenly became part of Ukraine after the war, as Poland was moved westwards.

Yeah, nothing to do with the refugees at all. It’s all about the increasingly authoritarian regimes in those countries undermining democracy and breaking EU laws. Their response the the refugees has been exemplary but is unrelated.

A bit cheeky of Glassers to link to it in this thread, but he can’t resist a bit of campaigning ;)

I'm sure this has absolutely nothing to do with the fact Poland is right next door to Ukraine.

Tho it is not all friendly between the two. Historically, the Poles have fought and occupied what is now Ukrainian land. Ukrainians siding with the nazis massacred Poles during World War II and a large chunk of what is now western Ukraine was taken from Poland in 1945.

So the Poles have acted partly in despite of fairly recent grievences.

Correct. As a Pole myself I can tell you it has never been friendly between Poland and Ukraine due to history and Ukrainians antagonistic attitude towards Poles.

Lets forgive each other and move on? Large percent of Ukrainians still sympathise with Stepan Bandera's organisation which commited all atrocities on Poles during WW II, you can find his statues at Ukraine, the streets of his name. Not so long ago the Polish cemetary in Lviv has been damaged. How can it be friendly then?

All refugees keep getting help in Poland as they need personal safety but the history between both nations won't be forgotten.
