The reason why The Poles have taken so many is because they are next door, it is also clear that displaced Ukrainians have more in common in many ways with the likes of the Poles than the British. The same will apply to countries such as Hungary, Solvakia, Romania etc. Also they would want, I imagine, to be closer to their home should they be able to go back. If for example the people of Scotland or Wales were on the run then I would expect we would take the brunt and the likes of Poland would take a lot less. that's the grown up part of the argument anyway.
Hooever - It is pretty shameful the way Pritti Patel has handled this and we should be here with open arms and a cup of tea to anyone who wants to come, no question!
Where are all these refugees actually living once they have moved country? I mean, are they in makeshift camps with tents?? Wherefor example are Poland putting 1m people - and where would we?

But with maybe 2 million having got over the border to a place of immediate safety, shouldn't the whole of Europe be saying "Right, send us X hundred thousand" and sharing the burden. Johnson wants all of the processing and paperwork to be done while they are kicking their heels on the Polish border, whilst the German Government has said "Send them on here, we can deal with that."
Because the reality is that many times more than this number may soon be heading West, and the Polish border area needs to be as empty as possible for there to be a chance of avoiding a secondary humanitarian disaster when millions of significantly more traumatised people start pouring in.

So Grant, how come as of the other day Ireland had taken in 1800 as opposed to our paltry 300 at the time (now 750 odd I believe). When I did my Geography A Level back in the last century, I thought Ireland was further away from Ukraine than the U.K.

I think Michael Gove is working on this and will make an announcement in the next couple of days.
I would imagine it's not that straightforward - there is a risk of nutcase potential murderers and rapists offering shelter and also a risk that whoever you shelter might be a bit of a wrongun and flee with all your jewellery - such I am afraid is a fact of life. There will also be a bit of a communication problem won't there - seeing that it is quite likely your new tenant(s) won't speak English.
I also wonder if your house insurance will remain valid.
