No way am I criticising McKenna, but it’s not as clear-cut to say keep on picking up 2ppg. That doesn’t take into account the six-pointers. We could have slipped up against lowly sides but picked up the same amount of points under McKenna by winning against our rivals at the top of the table. And by taking points of them, we’d be in a better position table-wise. It’s been widely noted the top sides aren’t dropping points as much as we’d hope and that’s what we’ve got to do to add to our chances by beating them. Come to the end of the season and during McKenna’s half of the season and our form under him is top two - then that’s auto form. Over the course of a 46 game season we’re going to struggle to get 2ppg if we can’t beat the top sides regularly. We’d be relying on our rivals slipping up again.
We could finish 10th or 11th this season and I’d still say McKenna has done a very good job.

It is that clear-cut though, if he can get 2ppg for an entire half of the season then it doesn't matter about who you best, it's a big enough sample size.

Obviously it's a big IF at the moment, and over the last 8 games to get 16 points (at least) we are likely going to need to beat some of Rotherham, Wigan, Oxford or Plymouth but if he gets us to 75 points then he couldn't really have done much more

Automatic promotion form isn't about beating the best teams, it's about constantly picking up 2 points per game regardless of opposition and that is what McKenna has done - it's inarguable we are on automatic form since he came in.

Will that drop down by the end of the season? Possibly as have a tough run of games

But when McKenna was appointed we had 29 points from 23 games, 2 points per game (auto form) from that point will take us to 75 points - I'm sure every Ipswih fan would have taken that when he was appointed.

But now 75 points simply isn't going to be enough for the top 6 so he can do a fantastic job and we finish 9th

I’m really hoping that getting 75pts and finishing outside the top 6 will be the end of the curse we’ve been u see for so long.

Seems such a Ipswich thing to happen.

Next season when L1 teams come here with 10 men behind the ball for 90mins, our fans base are going to explode in rage, we won’t win every game, it just won’t happen.
As you say, maintain that 2pt average and we’ll look very healthy

As well as this, surely people can just see with their eyes that we are a very good side now.

Or McKenna will leave us in the Summer for Middlesbrough/West Brom/AN Other in the Championship… 👀

You’ve said this before… I don’t think there’s a chance of that happening.

And even if it did, I think MA would have a plan already in place, to replace him with a manager of similar quality

I suspect he has a little more about than that.

He will on a good whack and will also appreciate its an opportunity to buiid something. Going to a struggling championship team like West Brom or Norwich could be a poison chalice that sets his overall career backwards

Point taken. But I still think we should be beating teams like Cheltenham and Morecombe, if we want to consider ourselves a promotion challenger. Regardless of who's managing the side... Taking nothing away from our improvement under KM, but the last dozen or so fixtures , have been relatively kind, imo... The next block of 5 , includes Oxford, Plymouth and Rotherham.. So, if we are to judge in blocks of 4 or 5.. It'll be interesting to see what the next block yields.... I just get a bit annoyed when people bring up Cooks early season results, as a single, excuse for the whole season... Fact is. We've still had it in our own hands. The teams around us and above us , to their credit, have kept up the good form. For some reason, we have still stuttered, when it 's really mattered.. Frustrating... Bolton and Seff Weds, we just didn't turn up.. MKD, Morc' away and Chelt' Pompey at home, were all games that I came away from from, thinking that we could have won , if we'd just "found a way"... I can point the finger at Cook for not providing a little points cushion/buffer... But still feel, we've dropped points under KM, in games we could/should have won... I'm sure KM feels the same..

Those first 6 games were dreadful though. 3 points from a possible 18 against sides that bar MK Dons are all going to finish below 10th. In reality the next 6 games were better but not ideal either - we still dropped 5 points from being ahead against Accrington/Cambridge and had 14 points from 12 games.

I remember feeling really dejected after that Cambridge game (having also been to Accrington too) and saying the autos are dead, which received a bit of derision on here. We were 12 points off that pace after 12 games and 5 points behind the play-offs, which we have never recovered from. Even two points per game from that point would have only left us on 82, which could be the sort of total needed to stumble into 6th at this stage!

Yeah it would be pretty risky to leave something that is going so well for a job that could be incredibly difficult before you've actually achieved anything.

We don't need to worry about this at all for the moment. The difference between what we are paying him and what championship clubs could pay really will be pretty nomimal. Sometimes it's better to pursue something where you know you fit and have already had an impact than risk taking on a job that could see you out the door in just a few months if it doesn't go well.
