What kind of manager comes in and slates the squad that he still needs onside to try and get results over the rest of the season?

This should definitely have been a job for Warnock, or dare I say it, McCarthy. They need a manager to get them out of relegation trouble and worry about next season once they are safe. I think they’ll go down under Lampard.

Burnley, Watford and Norwich are so poor that Everton will cobble together the results they need to survive.

I agree. They’ll just about be ok thanks to the three at the bottom being so dismal.

One thing I noticed during the Palace game was the term Frank Lampard’s Everton being used more than once. Thinking back to Roy Keane’s days and the unlikely suggestion that FL or his ghastly mate John Terry might come here jarred more with me than Chris Sutton being right for once in his life.

Fact of the day: the name Crystal Palace was originally used as a term of insult by Punch magazine when Paxton’s building was being put up for the first time in Hyde Park for the 1851 Great Exhibition. I guess that means Crystal Palace FC might have been called Sydenham Rovers or something, but for Punch.

Warnock has never survived a relegation battle in the PL and McCarthy only did so at Wolves, who were subsequently relegated under his and Terry Connor’s watch

Famous Frank may well have been a terrible appointment but those two would have been hilariously bad

To be fair when QPR stupidly sacked him we were outside the bottom 3 and ended up surviving on the last day that season.

That would have probably ensured their relegation!

It would be very funny if Everton were relegated, with or without Lampard, but funnier with him. Nothing against the club or Lampard, simply a reminder that nothing is certain in football and, the free market capitalist imbalances notwithstanding, it remains a sport that can surprise and mystify, delight and depress, dish out ecstasy and ennui up and down the nation across a single weekend. Fooootball!

Always a tough position to agree with Chris Sutton, but in this case it's hard to disagree with.

I haven't rated Lampard at all so far, he's done... Okay, but has nowhere near the credentials I would want if I was a PL owner.

I have a feeling this job role might be the point where he turns out to be a bit of a 'Tactics Tim' and either end up walking away from management or dropping into a coaching setup to earn his stripes (which he should have done from day one).

Their run in looks tough - West Ham, Liverpool, Leicester and Ar$e all away. Some tough home games against Man Utd and Chelsea plus a massive game at Burnley on 06.04. Having seen how Fat Frank set them up away at Spurs recently, I'm not convinced he's the right guy in the dugout for this battle. Time will tell.

Burnley v Everton at Turf Moor soon, could be very interesting if Burnley win that one.

It's a risky move from Lampard but players will be more willing to accept criticism from a man with multiple Premier Leagues, a Champions League and over 100 England caps than someone who played 15 years as a left back for Rotherham.

He feels like another Magilton - does a good job as long as he’s not under too much pressure. The issue with Everton is they need to be dull, defensive, hard to beat, accept 0-0s and try to steal a goal somewhere; Lampard isn’t that kind of manager.

And that’s why some clubs find themselves in trouble. A mistaken believe that a good player automatically means that they know what they are talking about.

Was the OP referring to the Rotherham left back or someone even more recent?

Either way , it didn’t work.

What clubs did Wenger and Mourinho play for? I’m not sure playing honours has anything to do with good management. See also Paul Lambert v Kieran McKenna.

Well, it worked so well here when Roy Keane did it...
