I guess if someone insulted my wife like that I’d be incensed too. Chris Rock is a bit of a d1ck to be fair.

It's a shame I didn't make it through the whole thing. Think I'd been on the Jamaican Woodbines that evening. A touch of class that Garry Bushell would add his name to the production. Knock yerself out, my good man:

I'm sure he is just hiding in the bushes cause he hates attention... I have to confess I have had the pleasure of meeting the Dazzler twice. I'm willing to invest up to €10 on video rental if need be

Bobby Dazler used to post a bit on TWTD - but sadly he went off with ZedRodgers, never to be seen again.

This is a true post, not nonsense.

Considering the subject matter of this thread, really poor taste to bring Willie Thorne into it - everyone knows his hair's all gawn and his mates all take the rise...

Weird take TBH.

Is racial humour okay if you do it to only an audience of white people?

I felt the jokes are in bad taste at the time and I still think that now.

Largely outside of that I like Gervais and as I said above I expect one day he’ll see it through different eyes.

Erm, no the weird take is from you, re: "is racial humour okay if you do it to only an audience of white people?" That's not anywhere close to what I'm saying, clearly.

You implied it’s fine to crack these jokes away from an audience more probable to be offended based on the target of the joke.

“Another point, the place is important to the context of the joke IMO. Your first article takes the joke out of a Ricky Gervais tour, where people have paid to see him and expect him to be a bit risqué, and puts it into real life (and thus a totally different context). Like, Gervais wouldn't make that joke at a speech to a transgender charity, for example.”

I like you Dolly and your heart’s in the right place, but come on. That’s a poor take and justification.

No, you're misreading it.

"These jokes"! You're lumping jokes together. It depends on the individual joke.

A joke about identifying as a chimp isn't necessarily transphobic, but you still wouldn't tell it in an after dinner speech for a trans charity, just because more people are likely to take offence. Gervais has said in several interviews, he doesn't go out to offend, which is why he's very careful about the wording of his jokes, and where they're told.

The poor take is by yourself because no-one's talking about racist jokes (either saying them or justifying them). You won't find a racist joke by Gervais in any context.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I’m simply moving the context to show you how poor that take is.

He made transphobic jokes. There isn’t a justified scenario to use comedy to discriminate against minorities.

It’s a pretty black and white.

Sexist and patronising because it is singling out women to be treated in a particular way. If it is desirable to refrain from causing humiliation then we should not humiliate 'people'.

Edit... Apologies... this should be attached to Glassers' comment.

No it's not. The jokes weren't transphobic, and I've explained why.

I explained why the chimp joke wasn't equating trans people with chimps, and it's laughable to suggest it was. It's like when you say an Ipswich player is playing the role X plays for Liverpool, and then some wally says, "OMG, you're equating X of Ipswich with Y of Liverpool!?"

You're not "simply moving the context" at all. Saying would you tell racist jokes anywhere has nothing to do with context. It's badly done misdirection.

As I said earlier, you're mistaking the subject of a joke with the target of a joke.

Gervais probably explains it better than I do here;

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Remeber this, Dolly? Seems you hold different standards when it's one of your heroes. But it was a classic flounce and misreading of the whole situation, so 10/10 for comedy value.

For starters, how weird to be dragging up a post from 2 years ago. You must have a very sad little life.

Secondly, I don't get your point anyway. The person I referred to in the OP is a known (to me) racist, who posts racist things on facebook (as I said in the thread). Again, context.

Why are you friends with an apparent racist on Facebook? Seems a bit weird.

And yes, my life is awful. I just sit at home all day eating own-brand cornflakes out of the box and w@nking into a flannel over the Littlewoods catalogue.

So if one member of Joe public had punched/slapped another member of Joe public in the street would the making of an off joke been sufficient to stop them being arrested? Would the reaction really be “good on ya Will”?

I just can’t see how physical violence is the answer, after all it’s against the law for a reason. I do wish he’d have confronted him with words during his acceptance, or failing to win, confronted him afterwards with words and not punches, I believe Will Smith is better than this.

People react differently. Who knows what went through Will Smith’s mind. It did look out of character.

But I was really addressing binner’s point that sticking up for his Mrs was patronising and sexist.

Gervais probably explains it better than I do here;

You’ve hyperfocused on that one aspect of one joke in one article.

1) it’s not the only joke he’s made aimed at Caitlyn that has wider discriminatory overtones. I sent you more links.

2) If I made a sexist joke is it okay if it’s directly aimed at someone? Would it be okay if I made a sexist joke so long as it was only other men in the room who all happen to be sexist? Therefore, apply it to transphobia, is it okay to make transphobic jokes so long as I have a direct named target as a subject and it’s away from the trans community ? As that’s what I gather seems to be your justification, and that ties into institutional issues with understanding how micro-behaviours tie into macro attitudes.

These are the core points laid out simply you should consider. I have no interest in an instant defensive response, just a way to think about how things are framed.

I think it was a slap too, he may have had time to consider this on his walk, a full on punch could have rendered Chris rock unconscious and required the broadcast to be stopped altogether. It’s all very unsavoury and put what was once a true cornerstone of glamour squarely in the gutter.
