Will Smith. Pulled out of a full on punch or intended powerful slap? 05:52 - Mar 28 with 13599 viewssolomon

I guess if someone insulted my wife like that I’d be incensed too. Chris Rock is a bit of a d1ck to be fair.

yes, but only with cutting words and piercing wit surely?
if fists are raised, as i understand these things, etiquette demands a feminine retort of "leave it, he's not worth it."

I think Will Smith may have challenged Chris Rock to pistols at dawn after that slap.

You’ve hyperfocused on that one aspect of one joke in one article.

1) it’s not the only joke he’s made aimed at Caitlyn that has wider discriminatory overtones. I sent you more links.

2) If I made a sexist joke is it okay if it’s directly aimed at someone? Would it be okay if I made a sexist joke so long as it was only other men in the room who all happen to be sexist? Therefore, apply it to transphobia, is it okay to make transphobic jokes so long as I have a direct named target as a subject and it’s away from the trans community ? As that’s what I gather seems to be your justification, and that ties into institutional issues with understanding how micro-behaviours tie into macro attitudes.

These are the core points laid out simply you should consider. I have no interest in an instant defensive response, just a way to think about how things are framed.

1. I thought I answered all of them. I certainly haven't focused on one aspect of one joke, maybe you've forgotten and should go back and re-read the thread.

2. We're going round in circles. I have explained myself re place context, and I dispute that the jokes were transphobic (and have explained why). Switching from racism to sexism doesn't help your point.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

know what you mean, but I think its the shouting/swearing afterwards which makes it probably real.

Also, if Smith was in on it, he's pranked at his wife's expense extremely publicly over something sensitive - unlikely, unless he wants a divorce.

Quite, on both counts.

Surely, if staged, the broadcaster would have had to be in on it & would never have agreed to the 'language' afterwards? Or do broadcasters in the USA have completely different standards? (not expecting you to know the answer!).

Deadnaming and referring to trans people as “it”. Comparing transitioning to the idea he should be able to transition into a chimp, which undermines and ridicules the concept (the old right wing “I identify as an Apache Fighter Helicopter” joke is old as sin now)

The context is little more than “I’m not racist but…”

Jim Davidson screwed us all over by doing that - rumour has it that Virgo was in line to replace Les Dennis as the host of family fortunes, but the LordGigachad behavior from Davidson made Virgo look weak, so they didn't hire him on.

So we all ended up as cucks watching Vernon Kaye screwing something we loved dearly.

Going by that, then referring to Jenner as "it" would count as transphobic and I accept that. I didn't know that was part of the definition and I suspect Gervais didn't either.

I have now read your Guardian article, which is much closer to how I feel and is actually fairly sympathetic to Gervais (so I'm actually surprised you linked it because your position seems a lot stronger against him). Couple of points that illustrate that;

"it was specific to Jenner to a substantial degree. And Jenner’s celebrity and her public sparring with Gervais over his Golden Globes speech are fair game."

I think this has been part of his argument - that it's not transphobic because the target is one specific person rather than all trans people.

and

"Gervais argues...there’s nothing you can’t joke about. I agree with that — just as I agree that comics, like anyone else, should take responsibility for what they say, do and effect. He deserves to be called out on his routine poking fun at the idea of transitioning, but I do think that the concepts he zeroes in on (“deadnaming”; identity as self-assertion) are fertile for comedy, precisely because they’re new, they’re destabilising, and (whether you welcome them or not) we’re still establishing where the boundaries around them lie. (A process with which comedy may help.)"

So it's a delicate area, where we're not quite sure of the boundaries. Perhaps you're more easily offended than me (I found Derek touching and beautiful in places) but I don't believe anything goes (I thought Jimmy Carr's travellers joke was in poor taste, for example).

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Well that should put an end to any ideas it was staged. It answers the OP question too - definitely pulled out of a punch. I can see that, been there myself as a youngster. These days I only preach peace, love and anti-Tory though
