Recruiting as if we're promoted 20:02 - Apr 26 with 10008 views | PaoloMarinero | I've seen it mentioned on here that we could be recruiting as if we were in the championship. If true, who could that mean in terms of targets? What promising Prem youngsters or settled Championship players would be in the radar? Is it a done deal that we'll get some Man Utd youngsters?

Recruiting as if we're promoted on 16:53 - Apr 27 by PhilTWTD | We'll spend but I think it's difficult to spend too much; in most cases players that would command fees and wages very much in excess of the average for upper League One won't be willing to move to this level as they could get the same at the level above. |
Isn't that what we did last summer though? I think people are getting carried away with 'breaking transfer records' etc but would think we are confident of getting a couple more Morsy/Walton/Celina quality players this summer.

I think that's probably right, what I meant was it's difficult to make bigger signings than those sorts of deal. Having said that, Celina was probably a level above the rest in terms of his profile, but he had a previous connection with the club. I'd expect a few Man U loanees, maybe players leaving the United academy that KMc knows and rates.

Yeah, I'm expecting that type of signing plus a 'marquee' striker and Celina if we can get the deal done.

From looking at the profile of their youngsters, it's hard to see who Man U would loan us exactly. They don't send a lot of them to L1 - the ones ready to make a mark in men's football tend to go to the Championship or overseas, the ones who aren't wouldn't be competitive in a team like ours. The only way Alvaro Fernandez, for instance, ends up here is if we're getting preferential treatment. Otherwise they send him to Spain or the Championship.

I reckon we might get preferential treatment, McKenna would be trusted more than other League One bosses.

Sure, but more trusted than other L1 bosses gets us Ethan Galbraith rather than Ethan Laird...

Exactly. I'd be a bit concerned if we go for more young Premiership loanees. Might give us flashes of brilliance, but come up short against the likes of Cheltenham on a cold Tuesday night. If we are targeting players from above - I'd go for Championship players with League One experience. Morsy commented that at times we think we're better than what we are and he's right. Would like to see players who know what this league is all about. We should know by now that young loanees with PL pedigree are unlikely to hit the ground running. They'll never have experienced the physicality and sh#t-housery before at academy level. [Post edited 29 Apr 2022 7:21]

I dunno about that, I can think of a fair few Premier League loanees who've thrived this season and last. Troy Parrott, Conor Coventry, Theo Corbeanu, Jamie Cumming, Jordi Osei-Tutu, Callum Doyle, Nathan Broadhead, George Hirst, Nathan Holland. All had decent seasons. Morgan Rogers last season was fantastic too.

I'd love to see Morgan Rogers here, think that ship might have sailed!

Rogers has had a rather disappointing season at Bournemouth (1 start, 14 sub appearances, no goals, no assists, not in a squad after January, sent back to City's U23s in March), so I wouldn't bet against him going out on loan lower down the EFL next year.

Didn't his deal at Bournemouth include an option to buy at about £12m? Not that they will be taking it of course, but gives an idea the level City value him. [Post edited 29 Apr 2022 16:07]

Recruiting as if we're promoted on 11:34 - Apr 27 by itfcjoe | Finance wise, once you are out of the parachute teams and the ongoing big hitters like Forest there is very little difference in spending power between those clubs and us Teams like Hull, Coventry, Luton etc don't have the muscle we do in the market |
But they do have the broadcasting income to help support paying Championship wages. If we spend big again this summer and don't get promoted next season, I'd predict that it will be the last summer of spending for a good while.
Recruiting as if we're promoted on 14:10 - May 4 with 744 views | OldFart71 | I think it has been said that players would be bought with the future in mind. Which I suppose is similar to "As if we were promoted" But then the Championship is a different kettle of fish to league One where even our supposed rivals to the top come to PR and are happy to gain a Mick McCarthy point. I do feel that we need to concentrate on the job at hand and let the Championship carry on as is. We have to one degree or another proved that it's not necessarily the case that to have a team full of technical players is the way out of this league. We certainly need a striker who's capable of 20 goals. I think possibly it would be a good idea to grab a former Premier or Championship striker and pair him up with a lower division Spanish, Italian or Dutch striker.
