Cricket: One more wicket to go 11:50 - Jun 14 with 3395 viewsSteve_M

NZ 249/9, 263 ahead. Don't really want to chase too many more than this, but the afternoon should be fun.

Looking at a chase of 3.60 an over if we bowl them out sharpish.

This is where 20/20 has had a positive impact on the game. Appreciate bowlers can do things differently in the test arena than the one day format and there’s more leeway, but I feel batsmen’s mindsets are different because of the shorter format. They believe they can chase these totals down, rather than simply surviving like they did in the past.

I respectfully disagree. There have been innings where he has shown he’s test quality, but even Crawley must be thinking it could be last chance saloon for the time being. Like I said, I’d still give him that final test at Headingley and see how he responds. If he doesn’t, then we’ve got our answer.

Crawley looks like he definitely has the ability, it's why he keeps getting chances. He's not an opener though and the balance of excellent cover drives to lose wickets is nowhere near enough at the moment.

36/1 at lunch anyway. A long way to go but a decent enough start.

He looks glorious doesn't he, but can't resist going after one outside off.

This is the thing, I don't see it - other than that big ton against pakistan, he's not really even looking like scoring runs.

Averages 18 from his last 30 innings, with 1 hundred and 2 fifties.

Doesn't appear to have a plan as to how to survive the early exchanges.

I saw somewhere that he edges something like 8 percent of deliveries he faces. Its just not going to work.

I agree, he reminds me a little of James Vince, when playing fluently looks absolutely superb at the crease, but has that weakness outside off stump. I still feel Crawley is worth persevering with, there’s enough to be encouraged about. So give him that final test and see what he produces.

Ah b0llocks.

Need Bairstow to produce now, he's done it before. Need to remember NZ are a bowler down here.

For all the understandable praise of Root, Mitchell is more consistent than him at the moment. He held the second innings together for them.

At that level so much of the game is mental. Crawley has proven time and again he doesn't have the chops for opening. Plays at way too many non wicket taking balls.

Is that a comedy hot take?

Root is clearly the best batsman in the world at the moment. He's doing it consistently, and has been doing it almost as an opener.

Mitchell had the benefit of not coming in until almost 40 overs had been bowled.

Haven't New Zealand's too order been collapsing too. Forgot about the first innings in the first test, though. Mitchell only got 13 there.

He had 1 run from about 70 balls at Headingley 2019 I think.

Talking of Headingly, do people think Yorkshire have done enough so far, or have taken sufficient measures for the future, to regain their Test ground status? Was surprised to hear they were already hosting the next.

It's a tough one, because taking that status away was obviously very damaging and punitive to plenty of people who weren't culpable. I think it's fair enough to reinstate it relatively quickly.

I felt that at the outset, as you can imagine since I live within range & have spent many a happy day at Tests there.

But if they've reinstated the ground for that reason, then perhaps the ECB shouldn't have imposed that particular punishment in the first place. Or maybe it was meant more as a warning shot across the bows.

139/4 at tea, nicely placed.

I wonder if I can work from home for the rest of the afternoon?

I didn’t look at the score post-tea until I got in at 4:30. I seem to have missed 75 runs or so.

Seen another 30 since… Ridiculous Test match this and all the better for it.

No survival mode for Brandon's England! Come on boys. Thought we'd be batting out the day after Root went

Latham b Anderson 4

NZ 284 all out, lead by 298

Glad it's under 300, stats weren't good for 300+!

Very rarely is there time in a test for a side to seriously chase 300+ and often on a deteriorating wicket too. More often than not a total above it is set by declaration.

Remarkable to have a side score 539 (EDIT: actually 553) first innings and lose. I feel the way this management team is going about things we might see some dramatic successful chases on top of today's.

Also would be gutted with the way New Zealand have approached bowling after tea and their fielding generally if you were a Kiwi.
