Does anyone else think it's time that the 'die die Delia Delia die' chant is put in the bin where it belongs? It's pretty foul, unnecessary and not exactly a creative masterpiece either.
Listening to people applaud the 'her game too' initiative last season, followed by them singing "she's a whore" was another embarrassing one.
I know it's just a chant, but I really hate hearing this one at PR or elsewhere. We even brought it out at Needham Market - what is the point?

While you are technically correct, there used to be the occasional season when it was generally agreed that the winner of the UEFA Cup was a better team than the winner of the European Cup. It was agreed by most neutral observers that ITFC was the best team in Europe that season. Ask Monsieur Platini if you happen to see him.
Also don't forget that in those days the EC was only for the league champions of each country.
I’m not sure I would believe anything that came out of the mouth of Monsieur Platini. You are right that there is a strong case that we were the best team in Europe that season. I have always thought the result against St Etienne was one of the best results achieved by a English club in Europe and never received the recognition it deserved. I have always thought we were the best team in division 1 that season and beating Villa 3 times, twice in the league and knocking them out of the FA Cup supports that argument. However, the records show that over the whole season Villa were better than us.

Yeah. I'm no puritan, but I've never joined in with die or wh@re songs. Just not my thing. The Fashnu chant is disgusting and shames us. I must admit that I like the power of the "hark now hear" when sung as one. It's one one of the few chants that ever really gets us singing as one. I understand the sentiment of those who dislike it though.
Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

Football chants don't bother me. They are just chants, nothing more.. I might not join in on some. But I'm not going to tell other people what they can and cannot do. That's up to them. I just see it as a bit of comedy. Like watching Jimmy Carr or Ricky Gervais or Alan Partridge. They'll say things that offend some people, whilst others find it funny or even , disgusting.. Context is key. Nobody wants Delia to die or thinks she's a w--- It's just an insult, aimed at rivals, for a laugh..

This is true actually. Some on here are taking things a little too literally.
I'm also pretty sure her food doesn't really taste like someone's sh!t in it.

I also cringe when the Champions Of Europe chant starts up. Unfortunately we have never been Champions Of Europe and it makes some of our fans look idiots when they sing it.
Point of order, it is "Bobby Conquered Europe" which is technically correct as we conquered everyone in the UEFA Cup.

The whole singing anti Norwich songs when we are playing Morecambe has long been an embarrassment for me. Especially 'Hark now hear the Ipswich sing', when we haven't played Norwich on Boxing day since 19 fking 80
We should probably stop singing about being the finest football team too, 100% factually correct songs only from now on
Highlighting crass stupidity since sometime around 2010

Think there's too much overlap on this thread between chants that people just dislike for being rubbish and chants that are actually genuinely hate speech.
The first is just preference, opinion, the second something else entirely for me. We've all got a line for the second one. I think most would definitely say racial slurs cross it and that mocking Justin Fashanu's suicide crosses it. Increasingly I'd say most object to homophobic slurs these days, although more likely to see those get a pass.
For me, "she's a whore" is an insult that builds on a protected characteristic (gender) which takes it beyond just a bit of fun and into active misogyny. "Die Delia die" is violent enough to be hate speech. "She makes mashed potatah, but we fckin hate her" is neither excessively violent, nor gendered, so seems fine.

I was referring to the “Champions of Europe you’ll never sing that” chant which for some reason some fans were singing to the West Ham supporters the other night.

Yeah agree, there are other chants I like/don't like but the point is around those that are.
I don't see the point in the anti Norwich chants but that's entirely personal preference. The two I referenced in the OP are the ones that I think cross into something far more unpleasant.
Your last para is spot on and articulated better than I have. There comes a point where the club should say something.

When you actually stop and think about it, singing songs at a sports match is quite a strange tradition and fairly unique to football in sporting terms (it has since spilled over to other games like Rugby and cricket). I always remember a game against Man City (it might have been the season they were relegated to Division 2 / League 1) and their fans seemed to sing “Luke Chadwick is the Elephant Man” almost continuously throughout the game. Very odd.

Yes, it has ruined Test cricket., where you have to put up with about 7 hours of moronic chanting.

It's not necessary to sing that when we have the brilliant "she mashes potat'er, and we fecking hate her".
And the Addams family/Norwich family chant. Both are witty and up there with the best football chants, so calling her a whore, or wishing her dead, are just crass and leave a bad taste.
The Fashanu chant is the worst of the lot, and I'm delighted that singing it is now being seen as the hate crime that it is.

We played at home on Boxing Day in the 82/83 season but I get your point.

I think you need to make absolutely sure of your facts on that one, there might be a poster on this forum who can recall 'Hark now hear the Angles sing, the Saxons ran away' at the jousting...

Between generations tastes change, styles change and football chants change.
Back in the day that Ebenezer was popular- and that’s awful.
100% this. Society though has a massive influence on people's actions . Unfortunately we are at the trigger point of social unrest . This country is going to explode and football will be one of those outlets

'That Ebeneezer' - you mean Edward Ebeneezer Jeremiah Brown? The one tune we have that is undeniably, completely and wholeheartedly Ipswich? The tune that was sung, loudly, by the NS on a whole number of occasions last year, and a load more away, notably by most of the 7.5k at the franchise?
It's a blinding tune, and should be sung a lot more.
This entire thread is fcking mental.
