That’s not really true, is it?

I'm a bit worried some of us are starting to get really sensitive about this.

We DO spend more money than most teams in this league. You can't deny that. Davis alone is more than half of the teams total transfer budget this summer.

Our wages also likely dwarf most of the league. You can't ignore that. That doesn't mean it's a bad thing.

I think this is going to be a bit of narrative for us from here on.

I am guessing some of these comments are intended to put pressure on us - like the Pompey guy the other day questioning if we'll blow it again. Some of it, will be opposition managers reducing pressure on themselves or questioning a bigger budget from their club's owners.

£1m was our first offer! It's definitely going to be a lot more than that.
As Phil has said elsewhere, it's between £1.5m-£2m just on Davis.

No pressure on him then if that's true! If we've spent that much on him I'll expect him to rip it up at 3pm every sausage afternoon.

We have.

£1.5m more than anyone else and one of only 4 teams to have spent on transfers. It doesn't seem a lot, but for this league it's large.

It won't necessarily be spot on, but Transfermrkt is a reasonable enough guide for quickly checking - https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/league-one/transfers/wettbewerb/GB3

I'm just going by what Phil has said. I'm sure he has his sources rather than plucking the figure out of the air.

Phil's take on the fee being in excess of £1.5m was "wouldn't surprise me" and "not confirmed", IIRC.

yeah, it doesn't really matter as long as it's within our means (i.e. the owners/Ashton aren't taking risks that's going to leave us in a financial mess).

It surprises me a bit how many people get worked up over finances as much as the football. Maybe it's the Football manager effect, or maybe football attracts a lot of budding accountants!

Either way, Clive Baker's TOTAL spend of £1.5m is obviously wrong, which was my point.

We have, as we did last year. Our transfer spend is likely the highest in the division, as was the case last summer.

Our wage bill will be one of the highest in the division too.

MA responded to a question from one of our supporters at Needham Market about marque signings along the lines of "...have you seen the size of our wage bill?"

Wasn’t being defensive, more about pointing out the fact it’s not necessarily true. But it is a fool’s errand to pick apart pre match pressers. Anyway it is what it is and the sooner we’re out of this bastard division the better.

We'll only then get the same thing in the Championship.

Just got to do the business on the pitch, the spend is only an issue if EFL decide we've broken FFP rules.

Who knows, really? All that's been reported is that a bid for Davis of £1m up front and £500k in add ons was rejected, we must have upped one or other element to get it accepted, but beyond that...

I prefer this to us having to say 'Derby have spent big again'.

Not sure we will? FFP works differently in the Championship, much less scope to just add more money to the budget.

It's unlikely that we'll be in a position to invest so much that we'll look like big spenders next to any of the clubs receiving parachute payments.

There is improved money streams coming into the club with additional potential increase in some areas. I would expect to see an increase in commercial revenue from additional advertising [Big screen and Digital advertising etc] The shirt sales have smashed previous records, we are about to start the season with a sell out crowd. Lat year we saw around 35 - 40K attendance across all the cup games we played, with the squad we have we should be able to go on a bit of a cup run without impeding our promotion push. Start winning, the crowds will continue to be big, meaning more revenue. If we have a higher revenue stream than other teams in the division why can't we spend it. We have had too bloody long of watching transfer windows pass us by, I for one am enjoying the new way.

Well I'd say logically they aren't going to cave in with say an extra £200k.
£300k? Perhaps. Could be £1.3m up front (+ whatever add ons). Then the £600k for Harness and whatever the loan fee is for JJ - so with a very conservative estimate you're looking at over £2m spent (before add-ons).

Trust the process. Trust Phil.
