Win tonight and actually win 3 in a row for the first time in what 3 seasons? Would be a sign things are moving in the right direction.

Fair enough. Sometimes i forget we're loaded. Other teams must really hate us.

Is it fair to say we are now exceeding expectations again on 12:14 - Aug 16 with 1151 views | jayessess | I don't think it's possible for us to exceed expectations in this division really. There's only one other club with similar resources to us.

That's so sad but true. Exceeding expectations is my favourite thing about football, and probably any sport. What fun is winning if you expect to win?!

Is it fair to say we are now exceeding expectations again on 12:19 - Aug 16 with 1116 views | cbower | Depends on your expectations. We are a big club in this league. 20k+ every home game, good financial backing, an increasingly professional set up. Competing at the top end of this league is my minimum expectation to be honest. It's the reason both Lambert and even more so Paul Cook were sacked. So exceeding expectations, certainly not.

After 3 long seasons at this level, I think meeting expectations would be a huge achievement for everyone involved. Get back to the Championship and we can talk about exceeding expectations!

Is it fair to say we are now exceeding expectations again on 12:29 - Aug 16 with 1063 views | clive_baker | Certainly not. Not a dig at you but a section of Ipswich supporters seem to have this acceptance of mediocrity. Its something that holds the club back to some extent IMO. I'm staggered when I see people say they would take a point at home to MK Dons for example. Why? I wouldn't suggest we go as far as an entitlement and arrogance that West Ham fans seem to have, but we need a healthy level of confidence and expectation. Our club shouldn't be in the 3rd tier, and the expectation should be that we get one of the 2 automatic spots and get out of it.

Others have recruited very well, and Peterborough will be eager to return on first attempt. Without another striker I'd say a top 2 finish would exceed most people's (realistic) expectations. That's a 9 place jump.
Is it fair to say we are now exceeding expectations again on 12:31 - Aug 16 with 1042 views | jayessess | At the moment, I'd say par for our budget in this league is Top 2. In the division above it's probably still Top 10 (there are 5 teams with parachute money, plus 2 more with larger fanbases - Middlesbrough and Sunderland).

Is it fair to say we are now exceeding expectations again on 12:37 - Aug 16 with 1002 views | Wallingford_Boy | MK Dons are not what they were, as results have proven already this season. They also should have made it 1-1, which might have made it a different story. We drew with Bolton, scraped past Forest Green and lost to Colchester in the cup. So no, not exceeding expectations.

If it transpires that others have put together better squads on tighter budgets, then they would be exceeding expectations and we would not be meeting ours. Imagine you're an outsider to the club and you see Ipswich get promoted from League One. Do you think, "wow, what an over-achievement, their manager must be excellent" or do you just think "yeah, with that budget I should bloody think so!". I think for most it'd be closer to the latter than the former. [Post edited 16 Aug 2022 12:53]

We've got 7 times as many points now as we did at this stage of last season. And we've played arguably better sides than we did at this stage as well. McKenna out.

If budget is the only factor you're willing to measure expectation by, yeah. Management styles / setup, player continuity, on/off field relationships, squad depth, club structure, etc. should all feed into this. We're still only a season into a full clear-the-deck rebuild, with an exceptionally green manager. In the other direction, I'm surprised people expected MK Dons to be anywhere near contention after their summer of relative upset.

Every club is going to have a variety of problems and strengths in all those areas, but when it comes down to it running a football club well is about using the resources you have well. If other clubs are getting more from less, they're doing it better than you, full stop. For what it's worth, I don't think we've got much room for excuses in those other areas either. We have good player continuity from last season (way more than Barnsley, Portsmouth, Sheffield Wednesday, Oxford, Charlton, MK Dons and Derby), , a big squad (product of our big budget), a big backroom staff, a Category 2 academy. Kieran McKenna's already had longer tenure than the managers of Derby, Barnsley, Charlton and Peterborough.
