We’re already giving game time to a Premier League youngster who we’ll send back on the summer; if we can’t sign Hirst permanently I hope we move on to other, permanent, targets. It’s nice only having one loanee in the squad.

Poll: Who would you play at right centre back on Saturday?

The other question, is if he will score to 20+ goals required in this season. I was already on the fence on that, but figured he was a player we could develop and then sell at a profit.

Without the benefit of that development of our player, I'd rather move on too.

BUT .... if he were still the man (if he was at all) to score 20+ this season to see us promoted then what ?

Then we send him back to Leicester and get Ronaldo on a free from Man United.
(Just a guess)

Would be quite a gamble considering his scoring record is similar to Bonne’s who, at best, we haven’t treated as a primary target.

It is nice, but i don't think one more loan would be an issue especially if we really want him. I suppose if he comes on loan has a great season and we get promoted it would possibly make it easier for the deal to become permanent at one point ?

If we have a great season, Leicester will sell him to the highest bidder who may well not be us.

Yeah perhaps that right but who would fit the "system" the best ?

Well that's the other side of the coin. Although we could bid pretty high im sure.

Doesn't a loan to a Champ club rule us out?

He will look at us and wonder if he will be a regular and must equally look at Pompey and wonder with all the strikers they now have.

We don't need another saga like Crooks last season ...

As I understand it we still want him permanently. If we can do a deal with them then that may supercede their intention to sign him to a longer-term contract.

That makes sense. Would like our offer to be permanent or walk away.

So could this be LCFC trying to get a better deal for both parties (him and them) by offering him "security" etc ?

It’s becoming a really boring protracted saga for a player who commands no hype or excitement. Is anyone really that interested in this signing which, by all accounts, is becoming increasingly expensive. Chasing business like this feels very at odds with how signings over the last 12 - 14 months have been bar Celina. We even gave up on Bradley when he signed a new contract so why chase Hirst?

I suspect he ticks all the boxes for both McKenna from the playing side fitting into a preferred system and Ashton on a commercial level.

Ultimately I expect it will go down to the wire (hopefully not deadline day) as it will be all about the structure of the deal. We could take him on loan at the death and then negotiate a fee under more relaxed circumstances.

Presumably because the manager REALLY thinks he will benefit the club.

I'll take McKenna's judgement over any amount of hype any day.

Isn’t it good that we have some targeted recruitment now? McKenna decides who is likely to fit into the team, both as a character and a player.

Rather than Cooks scattergun approach to transfers - sign 20 random players and try and build a team out of it.

I can't believe at 23 he is likely to break through at Leicester, so I assume it will be down to his ambition and wanting to play every week with a permanent club, not a continual loanee.

It's just silly to suggest Cook signed 20 random players. He signed players we needed, very good players some of them who are still amongst our best now.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Targeted recruitment means you move on to the next in the list rather than bow to the whims of others financial demands. North of 1.5 million is a silly figure for an unproven player at league one level especially in the wake of the Davis signing.

But he didn’t buy specific players to fit his system, he brought in okayers and tried to fit them INTO his system.

Which was very evident in yet performances/results.

There’s still question marks over McKenna’s ability in the transfer market though. Last season’s additions were mediocre if not below average and it’s a little too early to tell on this season’s influx.

He scored 15 in 46 games for Portsmouth last season.

I would happily take a loan with an option to buy based on promotion, appearances or something along those lines. It would actually lower our risk as, were he not to be all that, we would send him back at the of the season. If it was based on promotion, we could probably afford a higher fee than an outright purchase now too.
