What are you realistic expectations for the next 3 years? 13:55 - Sep 22 with 4905 views | LegendofthePhoenix | Probably 99% of us would say that this season everything is going as well as it possibly could. So aside from dreaming, what do you reckon is most likely in store for us over the next 3 years? Will we come back down to earth with a bump and fail to get promoted yet again? Will we get back to back promotions? Somewhere in between? My guess is auto promotion this season, then further strengthening and a just about top half finish in the Championship in 23/24. Then with further strengthening, a serious promotion push in 24/25. Lose the next two and it all looks horribly familiar. Win them, it looks very exciting.

What are you realistic expectations for the next 3 years? on 17:54 - Sep 22 by Radlett_blue | Sorry, I will revise my statement to just the last 4 seasons. That makes 5 out of 12 clubs which is 42%. |
Think club size is a big variable here.

What are you realistic expectations for the next 3 years? on 19:15 - Sep 22 with 1245 views | BigCommon | A realistic hope, for me. Would be promotion this season. Then, assuming we strengthen accordingly. And with some considerable momentum. I don't think a top 6 push in The Championship, would be out of the question... If you look at what Sunderland are doing in The Championship. There looks to be scope, for any decent sized and upwardly mobile club, to make an impression in that division. Having come up from L1. 4 or 5 Championship quality additions to our existing squad, plus 1 or 2 cherry picked Prem' loans. Don't see why we couldn't aim for top 6 finish. should we get promoted. And lets be honest. No matter how cagey you want to play it. If we don't get promotion this season, with the level of investment over the previous two seasons. It would be a shocker. Putting it kindly. [Post edited 22 Sep 2022 23:11]

I agree that a club the size of Ipswich, with its support base & now new owners, has a much better chance of making a realistic go at the Championship than clubs like Rotherham or Wycombe.

What are you realistic expectations for the next 3 years? on 23:01 - Sep 23 with 1087 views | Nthsuffolkblue | The next two do not define our season. If we lost them both we could easily still win the league. Similarly, if we won them both we could easily still fail to make the play-offs. There is a long way to go. What we have done is consistently take each game as it comes very effectively. I suspect we may well draw both of them. I am confident we will make a far better attempt at promotion this season than any previous one. Provided we do get promoted, I would agree with your following two years assessment. Consolidation with investment followed by investment in having a proper push at the Premier League. That would nicely coincide with the next rotation of nodge being in that league too.

What are you realistic expectations for the next 3 years? on 08:44 - Sep 24 with 1049 views | Vic | Good thread - I like it. Promo this season - hopefully auto. We’ll likely have a better idea in a week as to the possibility/probability of that. Next season will see sensible strengthening and a comfortable upper mid table finish. While this goes on the general infrastructure will continue to be developed - especially the scouting. Season after will see significant strengthening with a couple of marquee signings (possibly a couple of prem players persuaded to drop down for ‘the project’ and a top 6 finish. PS McKenna isn’t going to go anywhere until it’s obvious the project is losing its head of steam. This job could take him to a level where he can have any job in the country. He’s going to be provided with all the resources, funds and support he could want for so why should he leave?

What are you realistic expectations for the next 3 years? on 15:45 - Sep 22 by jayessess | Worth noting, should we return to the Championship for 2023-24 there wouldn't be very many teams in the division who are competitive with us financially. 20 of 24 Championship teams currently have smaller average attendances. 11 of those teams, it's less than 2/3rds of ours. On fan-derived revenue, there's basically 2 teams (Sunderland, Sheffield United) that would have any advantage at all. You'd also presume that GC20 would top that up with whatever maximum additional investment is permitted. Obviously the parachute teams still blow you out of the water, but it shouldn't be like 2017-18 where we had a bottom 6 budget. [Post edited 22 Sep 2022 15:47]

This for me. Given the standard in the Championship at the moment, given the financial backing we've got this year. I wouldn't be surprised the expectation being, promotion this year and a push on the playoffs next year. You've only got to look at where Rotherham and Sunderland are at the moment to see that could be a realistic aim for us.

What are you realistic expectations for the next 3 years? on 15:01 - Sep 22 by itfcjoe | Get up from this league Stay up relatively comfortably Look to push on so that we are going for a top 6 place in the Championship Basically back to where McCarthy had us from 2013-2016 but looking to build on that and progress rather than make the managers job harder every year by stripping back from that point |
Fair assumption, | | | |
What are you realistic expectations for the next 3 years? on 12:49 - Sep 24 with 888 views | ParisBlue | Automatics this year, then consolidate as an upwardly mobile top 10 championship side. With the same teams bouncing up and down between the Premier league and championship there's fewer parachute teams atm. Plenty of sides with parachute payments have proven its possible to reach the playoffs over the last few seasons, e.g Barnsley, Huddersfield, Luton.

At the moment, the "horribly familiar" is looking more likely than the "very exciting". But as football fans, we generally live in hope. The next game is always the one that could start our run of winning. I'm concerned that our style of play is too focussed on pushing forward and attacking, and when we lose possession, we are caught on the back foot and at sixes and sevens. I think the defenders are probably good enough, but it is more that they are all pressing forward too much. A team that plays deeper and when it goes forwards does so at real pace, rather than slowly moving the entire team up the pitch, would leave us defensively more solid and just as dangerous going forward. But that's just my simplistic view as a fan. [Post edited 13 Feb 2023 9:24]
