You're right, that does sound stupid. We've scored in every league game. Seven of those more than once. Our forwards have scored 13 of our 19 goals. And in our last 2 games our defence hasn't been good enough, conceding 4, and letting the situation (being in the lead at a rival) get the better of them mentally [Post edited 25 Sep 2022 14:33]

Agreed. We're slipping back to the Royle days where the attack has to score three to have a chance of a win. Keogh has to come in for Edmundson next week.

My point is that we don't score too many goals goals of a really good quality, it's not the quantity. We're unlikely to pass through the better teams, as seen today and last week. We could do with being able to score goals from range and with individual quality, like Plymouth did twice to win the game.

That makes even less sense. Why is it better to score good goals than lots of goals? Besides, I think we have scored a lot of very good goals this season too. It was hard to choose the goal of the month for August that was then put forward to the league competition for goal of the month too. We also passed through Plymouth several times today for chances for Ladapo, Jackson and others.

Agree, tho as I said in a couple of other threads, the guy I think we're missing most is Aluko & his wise old head coming on to shore us up when we're facing the 60 minute-> onslaught from oppositions trying to get back in it.

We’re just not as good as we think we are on 14:53 - Sep 25 with 2279 views | DJR | I think we are very good. It's just that there are also some very good other teams. The issue I have, when we play the better teams, is that Morsy and Evans can be overwhelmed. Perhaps time for Ball to replace Evans in such games.

Might be better when we're up to sacrifice a attacking player, put ball on in the middle to grab hold of the midfield and squeeze the opposition there,
We’re just not as good as we think we are on 15:01 - Sep 25 with 2189 views | OldFart71 | Thought we looked weak on Donaciens side of the pitch. Crossfield balls left him one on one several times and they knocked it into someone running off the ball and created chances. Thought McKenna made a mistake taking Ladapo off as well as Walton was still trying to hit our forward line and there wasn't anyone to challenge. Both their strikes were excellent, but how many times did Jackson get free and fire a ball into the penalty area with no one following up. I am like many who feel we need another striker. But more of a Marcus Stewart or David Johnson (either of) type rather than some big lump. We have that with Ladapo.

Because every now and then you'll need a bit of standout quality to win a game a big game, you can't always rely on pattern of play. It just makes me think it might be our downfall when we look back on the season and games against our rivals. We might have got through them, but for whatever reason we didn't make those chances count. They also created chances they couldn't convert, but instead went and scored two from 20-25 yards. We have scored a couple like that, Chaplin and Harness come to mind. I'm just not sure we'll do it enough over the course of the season.

- We've scored 3 goals in the last 2 games. - We've scored 6 goals in 4 games against the top 6 sides. - We've had 59 shot against the 4 top 6 sides - Let's not forget we had a legitimate 7th goal taken away from us against Barnsley. What we are doing in offensively against the top side has been working. We've also looked good for the majority of the time in defence. But against Barnsley, Sheffield Wed and Plymouth, our defence has looking panicked and vulnerable when we've been in front in the latter stages of the game. - We've conceded 8 goals in 10 league games. - 7 of those goals have come against the 4 top 6 sides. This is what we need to address if we want to give ourselves the best chance of finishing in the top 2

No, what we need to do is see out games defensively (as a team). 1-0 v Barnsley: Conceded 2-1 v Barnsley: Conceded 2-0 v Sheffield Wed: Conceded 2 1-0 v Plymouth: Conceded 2 6 goals against 4 top 6 sides should be good enough for more than a 3 point return. We have done our job offensively, not defensively.

If Walton's header was just an inch lower. We are clearly one of the best teams in this division, but so are Plymouth.

You're right, although you could argue there was a relatively large hint of fortune about all three goals in the last eight days. I just think our rivals look more of a goal threat than us, basically.

We're talking long ago and a different pedigree pf player, but wasn¨t David Jonson the first a striker of what you call the 'big lump' variety? As I say, we're talking a high calibre of 'lump' here, as Mariner was bought to replace him, and for Liverpool Johnson was often competing with Toshack for a place up front alongside Keegan. I'd have thought David Johnson 1 and David Johnson 2 were examples of the two different types you're talking about. But it's a genuine question, - I was young, and I may be misremembering simply because he looked so imperious.

I wouldn't describe Johnson the first as a big lump. He was pretty pacy from what I can recall. EDIT: Wikipedia describes him as a "battling, play-linking forward forging a productive partnership with Trevor Whymark", so maybe he had a bit of a lump about him. [Post edited 25 Sep 2022 19:14]
