Did it with my Mum, but it was quite complicated for various reasons and so ended up using legal assistance. I think my other half has also done it in the last 3 or 4 years so I will ask her.
I'm not sure it's something that you'd be advised to DIY. Could get a bit complicated further down the line if and when it was needed. |  |

It can be provisionally set up, to be triggered when necessary. My mother did this (for both finances and health), which proved vital when she was taken ill at Easter.
We used a consultant (lived locally in the village), just to make sure all was done properly. Don't know what the fee was, but not that expensive IIRC. |  |

There are 2 types, as you probably already know: health & welfare and property & finance, so cost may depend on whether you are doing one or both.
Also the number of attorneys will affect the cost - the one myself and 2 sisters did last year for both types cost £750 between us.
I believe it all has to be done by a solicitor, as the LPA(s) all have to be signed off by them anyway.
Takes quite a few months to get sorted too. |  |

I did one (health and legal) when my mum was first diagnosed with dementia a few years ago. It was “fiddly” and we ended up having to submit three times due to minor details (think once was purely about not using an initial on one section for the doctor but did on another. It was just a pain but saved around £900 I think from memory (£450’each) based on quote from solicitor.
If you are patient and good with completing formal forms and documents it’s doable, if you are in a rush and not confident pay for solicitor to do it

As a first port of call go to Gov.UK then search the site for Power of Attorney. Plenty of info on there.
If you just Google POAs then there are any number of sites after your business and your contact details. I tend to try to avoid these.

If you want it simple, its very straight forward to do yourself. If you have any complicated wishes, its best to involve a specialist...
things to bear in mind....
simple is good - anything that limits the power of the attorney can cause problems
if you have multiple attorneys make sure you agree how they should work - ( do they have to agree and sign off everything together, or can they work independently? in my wife's case, her and her brother are attorneys, but they want to be able to look after different things, so they trust each other to do what is needed ( severally), if everything needed both of them to agree/sign it would be really difficult, as we live 200 miles apart. )

DIY via .gov.uk is not difficult to do and saves you hundreds. Read it through, check it, check it again, get someone else to check and give it a last check. You should be fine. | |

Yeah did it myself for my Dad, relatively straightforward and they provide guides through each section of the report on the gov.uk websites. There may also be charities that can help - I used one for another set of forms and got 90mins free legal advice on applying for care funding. |  |

We've just done ours. Used a solicitor who did us a discount after doing our wills.
II think it was about £400 for each of us, covering both health and financial LPAs (and including the official fees). |  |

AFAIK once in place, it is already "set up" and there is no triggering to be done. It is a condition that you, as POA, only do things to help the person and they can remove the "power" if they wish.

What we did was set up and ready to go, but only came into force once we formally notified people (inc. circulating documentation). It was several years between when it was done and activation.
Was very helpful when Mum was in hospital and non-compos-mentis, as we (the children) were able to get medical information and take decisions on her behalf. Also to handle her finances when she couldn't. | |
