Butter and jam...or honey if you forgot to buy jam (the butter and the honey in moderation so that they soak into the crumpet but do not run all the way through to the plate, or onto your trousers if you have been impatient and just chomped on the crumpet straight out of the oven or toaster.)

I’d bring back Transportation for that sort of crime.
The crumpet has to be well toasted so the top/bottom are crunchy. Immediately deploy plenty of butter and bingo, that’s all you need.
An alternative is good strong cheddar or if you want to go all exotic, stilton. One thing that might work, but I’ve not tried yet is cheese and Worcestershire Sauce. It works for cheese on toast (not too much WS), so I think it might work for the wonder that is the crumpet.
Best crumpets? Warburtons aren’t bad. Certainly better than Aldi, Tesco, Asda but I’d be interested to know others preferences.

The Co-op's own brand are better than Warburtons but they seem to have given up in most places and just put the branded ones on the shelf. I think Morrisons do their own too, probably a good bet both for price and for quality.
Myself I prefer a soft top so that maximum absorbency can be achieved but a toasted bottom is good if it prevents the juices escaping - yes, I do have a weird sex life...

Only if they are baked or gratin. Thick sliced bread, toasted, drowned in kerrygold and covered in mature cheddar. Possibly a slice of ham on top if I'm feeling a tad frisky

Butter soaking all the way through to the plate is one of the joys of crumpets. Then you can mop it up. Mmm.

If you're making a fry-up, toast until almost crispy, and when you've finished cooking the bacon, chuck the crumpets in the pan to soak up the fat, and then bung your fried egg on top; nice alternative to fried bread (and makes the frying pan easier to clean )
