It's almost like all that blubbing after drawing with USA was a massive overreaction.
9 goals, 7 points, back-to-back clean sheets, knocked out Wales and topped the group to avoid France in the next round. Also managed to rest Saka and Sterling, got Kane and Rice off early and got 60 vital minutes into Walker.
It's going alright. It's knockout football, anything can happen and we've got a sniff. No more of a sniff than a handful of other sides but arguably not much less of one either. I would give England a 10% - 15% chance of winning the thing.

All true, except topping the group didn't make us avoid France in the next round, we're scheduled to meet them in the quarters

Southgate and England is pretty much what Mick was with town. He has a job to do. He makes it happen. It's not pleasing on the eye but it works.
If we win the world cup.. doesn't that make Southgate the most successful English manager ever? Think I head on tele the other might he's managed 16 competition games and won 10 of them....

I wouldn't say England aren't easy on the eye. We've got serious quality and pace out wide and in the final 3rd, and we're nowhere near as direct as McCarthy's 4-4-2. I would say England are more like Ipswich now under McKenna. There's a level of pragmatism with Southgate's 'double pivot' but I think that's largely because he's not convinced with us defensively and the opening game didn't do much to reassure him.
A World Cup Semi, a Euros final (lost on pens) and a World Cup would almost certainly have to make him the most successful England manager. I think there's an argument that he would have won the WC when it's harder to win too. If I had to punt now I would say we'll go out in the 1/4s or Semis but here's hoping we don't.

I think many (most?) England fans have under-rated Senegal since the start of the comp, they're still a good team even without Mane. Hope they don't prove to be our 'shock result', following those others for 'big' teams.

It won't be easy, they're big, fast and physical which isn't dissimilar to USA who we struggled against. I would really fancy us against classically European sides, I think we've got the speed of thought and execution against a Poland, Croatia, Netherlands. Certainly Australia too in terms of how they play. I agree Senegal won't be easy but I think we'll have plenty of the ball and hopefully can unpick them. They do tend to concede.

It's all personal preference really, Some will take to the patient football and when we do attack, at points it is fast and exciting, but like the USA game, there are times where it's a frustrating watch. BUT he's a manager who will go into a game like that with a don't lose mentality which imo was prime Mick in his " wouldn't get on the bus if you offered me a draw" mentality.

Every point's a prisoner doesn't work so well in knock-out football though.
