Would they still appear to be a nurse to a regular patient due to what they are being asked to do? Google actually quotes a figure of £24,907 but that appears to fall between band 4 and band 5. Whatever it is, these figures are vastly different from what Zahawi was banding around in his interview where he is claiming the strikes are supporting Putin somehow. Why is there no pay grade for MPs depending upon qualifications and experience? I suppose they all do the same job and extra experience makes no difference?

Absolutely, yes. Nursing assistants do a awful lot of the 'hands on' stuff. They're our eyes and ears The best registered nurse in the world will look average(at best) without decent nursing assistants.

If you stand on the doorstep clapping for long enough, you will feel warm enough to turn your thermostat down enough to compensate for the lost heat from when you were stood on the doorstep. And we will all feel much better about the world and forget about the richest making money out of it all while telling us there isn't enough to go around.

My other half has been a nurse for 30 years & is at the top of band 5 (the one below a sister which she has never wanted to be) & her pro rata salary is £35,000. An experienced senior nurse considered a role model by her specialist team aged 50 is that poorly paid. It’s a fookin disgrace.

Salary for a Band 5 nurse, inclusive of the pay offer, goes from £27,055 to 32,934. Band 5 is a staff nurse, so it is the grade for a qualified nurse. Band 6 is a senior staff nurse, who will often end up acting as nurse in charge on a ward, that pay scale goes from £33,706 to £40,588. Nurse in charge/ ward sister is usually Band 7, which goes up to the heady heights of £47,672, or maybe what Zahawi gets in a couple of months for one of his sideshow jobs.

Many nurses find themselves stuck at the top of band 5 because of lack of opportunity to progress and this is one of the (many) reasons for leaving.

Does UNISON membership provide professional liability cover? As a physio I have cancelled my CSP renewal as I'm not paying £400+* for another year. I've heard UNISON does similar stuff and is cheaper. * £421.20 to be precise. [Post edited 5 Dec 2022 13:45]

How is it a disgrace if she has chosen not to promote? I get that she didn't want to become a band 6 for whatever reason but if someone has chosen to stay in a certain pay band then they have to accept the pay that comes with it. If she's got 30 years' experience she would comfortably be a band 7-8 by now if following the natural progression. [Post edited 5 Dec 2022 13:42]

But whether she stayed where she is, or got promoted, her pay would still be 8% lower in real terms than it was in 2010, and that's before the current high inflation rate is taken into account. That doesn't strike me as fair. And certainly isn't going to attract or retain staff. And with nursing 46,000 vacancies, things will only get worse. [Post edited 5 Dec 2022 13:53]

Yes absolutely that part is unfair, but it's a different point to the one you made originally. It sounds like she's got the knowledge and is doing the job of a much higher band in all but name, so she could be getting the corresponding salary if she had decided to go higher than a band 5.
