Cost of living / food shopping 14:35 - Dec 12 with 12490 viewsclive_baker

I've been playing around with buying some supermarket own brand alternatives lately. I shall go full Martin Lewis with you now and reveal my findings:

Tesco Chocolate Digestives. Get on them. Only 55p and bl00dy lovely. Actually better than the branded alternatives, more chocolate to biscuit ratio. Don't buy the Molly's ones though, they're rank.

Tesco Oat Milk. Passable but not as nice as the branded one I get. £1.20 instead of £1.80 doesn't justify the trade IMO.

Marmite - Don't mess with the GOD. Bought a supermarket alternative, had it once on toast and can't see myself eating it again. Absolutely fecking rancid. Literally tasted like salt on toast.

I don't mess about with Mayo or Salad cream, I'm sorry the stakes are far too high with that.

Bran Flakes - Switch. No brainer. No discernible difference. £1.10 instead of £3 for the branded alternative that sounds like Mellogs.

Dry Pasta. Commodity product, who buys branded pasta? 41p for 500g vs. £1.50. No brainer, switch.

Nappies. Fred & Flo absolutely fine (I've always bought these anyway to be fair). Not sure why you would pay twice as much for something that'll get covered in p1ss and sh1t and end up in the bin after a few hours.

Anyone got any more hacks in your shopping basket?

You need to try an Aldi Bounty - they come mini size in bags of about 20

Ditto Milky Way

I don't however eat a lot of chocolate but I have found Cadburys to have become a bit greasy over the years.

Mind you it might be my taste buts - for the past fortnight everything tastes metallic, even Golden Virginia

Bounty's should be banned full stop, awful things, I'd prefer eating my bodyweight in Battenburg.

Don’t knock Battenberg, or window cake to give it its proper name. Bounty is good too! Coconut and chocolate: great combo. You get to enjoy it a while too as those shards of coconut emerge from your teeth.

I suggest you take a look in the mirror and give yourself a good talking to.

We're going to fall out.

Bounty's are an abomination.

What's strange is, I'm partial to a Malibu and Coke.

Fully expect the full force of Phil's banhammer for this.

I used to pop into raja all the time as I walk past it every day, or I did before wfh anyway, but not been in there in ages. It is indeed a great shop, and cheap too. Plus they sell cock flavour seasoning, which makes me chuckle.

You don't need to go to Raja for that, Dubbers, my darling...

Dark chocolate Bounty has the advantage over most other bars of the proper endorphin releasing chocolate and no addictive palm oil.

Actually, I’ve tried Malibu and Coke years ago and liked it!

You need a rethink on the bountymeister though. A fine product.

Seems I'm fighting a losing battle here on the Bounty front, just absolute trash at the bottom of every Hero tin I've come across, they're always the ones left behind around the 29th Dec, with the Dates.

Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't mind Malibu, obviously in very small does and infrequently, as it can be incredibly sweet, it just messes with my head how I can be so against a Bounty, but like a Malibu.

Love a bounty, especially a red one. Also enjoy the odd random pint of malibu and pineapple juice on a sunny day ( just add rum and ice). Both so exotic..

I'm with you on that. You know it's bleak when you dip your hand into the tin and your only option is a bl00dy Bounty. Chewing metronomically on that desiccated coconut, as you flick through the Radio Times only to find your options limited to Mrs Brows Boys or the Big Fat Quiz of the Year. All you wanted is a mini Mars bar and some respite from the inane drivel of your inlaws.

Indeed, a Bounty is the Chocolate equivalent of Miranda.

I can’t abide marmite but love twiglets.

Malibu is ok. I have torrid memories of drinking a whole bottle in 20 mins with a chum in the middle of the night sitting against a wall in Oostend after we’d missed the ferry. Cold and bored we thought it’d be a laugh. After all, we’d spent a couple of weeks keeping Europes wine and beer industry going and it was only a drop coconut juice (a present for his mum).

It went down a treat. No problem. And then…… omg the consequences were horrific. The gf wasn’t wholly impressed either. Still like it though.

Yep, most peoples experience is draining the parents booze cupboard and realising that a bottle of it leaves a nasty memory. I'm like that with Campari.

Don't mention you like it though, as some posters will want to have a board pile on you for the next 5 years.

Thankfully a lot of those drongo's have departed, so we don't have that mindless trash these days.

I’ll take the hits. I quite like it. I like Cointreau and Gran Manure too - especially on pancakes!

The routine is one with your standard lemon and sugar, then onto the real deal. Cointreau is best. A little sprinkle of sugar and a dessert spoon (or two!) of Cointreau. Roll it up and jobs a good un. Four of those and the worlds a happy place. Not sure pancakes would work with Malibu or Archers, but I’m willing to give it a go.

Not in my world. I’ve always stood by the coconutage.

For the philistines on this Board, Bounty chocolates can be found in Celebrations tubs, not Heroes. And in said Celebrations, it’s the minute roll of ghastliness called Snickers (Marathon to old timers like me) that get left - as indeed they should be.

I’m all in for the Bountys. No mutiny here!

Nah it’s the Mars bars that are trash. The Bounty is a beauty, dark chocolate one more so, and Snickers is great but its peanutless runt of a brother Mars is honestly one of the worst chocolate bars in the country. Pointless, horrible stuff.

I’m glad you are aboard HMS Bounty bar. Snickers?.well I don’t like the taste of peanuts so they’re doomed. The Mars ones are odd in that a full size Mars is a thing of beauty and a joy, especially if chilled. The miniature version really is too small and offers nothing.

Mars are called Milky Ways in America and is one of the few chocolate bars there that’s ok.

Mrs itfcjoe got me a Celebrations advent calendar one year, she was really pleased with her choice but was admonished as knew there would be Bountys in there. There was, 5 of the f**kers. And just one of the MalTeaser thing.

It's Heroes all the way this year, 3 fudges vs 0 crunchies so far though

Bountys are the work of the devil. I recall a mate going shopping whilst skiing and returning with a jumbo bag of them, which we then unwrapped in front of him and threw of the balcony. Even the french wildlife didn't touch then for the week we were there...
