Trying to think about who I'd like us to target 23:00 - Dec 19 with 7665 views | TalkingBlues | in January. No idea what is realistic within the confines of wage limits etc, but I doubt any of those I mention could command huge fees given it's league 1. Some will be out of contract, or loans, so all achievable potentially. The more I think about Connor Wickham, the more it seems a no brainer given his contractual position, history with the club and the fact that he's fit and injury free and already has 9 goals under his belt this season for a crap team. Anis Mehmeti - haven't seen an awful lot of him, but what I've seen is very, very good, Celina'esque, would be a great addition. Nathaniel Mendez-Laing - good player, nuff said Jesurun Rak-Sakyi - on loan to Charlton currently, but there's been hearsay that as they are managerless and struggling, Palace may look to loan him elsewhere. Quick, skilful, has goals in him and wouldn't count for the 22 limit due to age, would be a very handy signing indeed. I have not given much thought to central midfield, we need reinforcing, but I don't know what exactly McKenna will be looking for given Humphries emergence, does he go creative, or brick wall? I'd like to see another CB, we've played against a lot of very good ones this season, not really sure who'd I'd go for tbh, or indeed if we are even looking, but I think Keogh needs to move out of the 22 and make space for someone more dynamic. If we can nick a player or two from promotion rivals I'm up for that too, even if it's just to weaken them on the run-in, Whittaker prime example. I genuinely can't wait for January and to see what actually comes through the door, but please Kieran, not another Camara, we can't afford projects, we need players who can go straight in.

Trying to think about who I'd like us to target on 10:13 - Dec 20 by J2BLUE | I think we need some serious expectation management. I have no doubt we will sign some good players in January and be a lot stronger but some of the names/ideas people are coming out with are very unlikely. Signing a Plymouth player just to weaken them. This simply won't happen. If they have a player we want then we may well make an approach but they are going to fight it with everything they have. It's just incredibly unlikely. Yes, I know, Marcus Stewart. It was lightning in a bottle. Will Keane - started last night in the Championship. Whittaker - Why would they recall him from a loan where he is doing well to loan him to us? It's fantasy land stuff. Again, we will very likely sign some very good players, but people are setting themselves up for disappointment with some of the unrealistic names. [Post edited 20 Dec 2022 10:40]

Is Will Keane that unrealistic. Seemingly close to joining here in the summer, hasn't signed his new contract. Wigan isn't the best run club in the world, believe there are some questions over the ownership there. They have a clear ceiling right now and they are probably at it. We are a far more attractive proposition than Wigan, that's not Ipswich bias. Its obvious.

Trying to think about who I'd like us to target on 10:12 - Dec 20 by FrimleyBlue | I dunno. It's gone from Edwards beginning to form a great partnership with davis. To Jackson suddenly given the nod to play a 10 role which let's be honest is completely not a Jackson role. It'll be interesting with Harness and Aluko back.. how much game time Edwards now gets. Personally I feel he's not made the most of the opportunity. But we'll see. |
I am convinced that he is going to be the one that surprises most fans by departing in January. He didn't start in a fully fit squad and doesn't start in an injury ravaged squad, hasn't made any meaningful contribution by way of goals/assist and isn't good at doing the dirty work. The signals appear to me to be the clearest the manager can give that he isn't a fan.

Only just fit again having missed most of the early season through injury - but just noticed that he came on in the 87th minute last match and was then subbed about five minutes later - so maybe not fully recovered yet

Tactical change, Kompany wanted a defender on. He did get absolutely munched about a minute before he went off, but he was ok apparently.

Agree I can't see a world where Whittaker is recalled and loaned to us, unless it's a formality that the deal is effectively a permanent one. As others have said if Swansea see a future for him there then he won't be coming to us, if they're happy to sell then it's not one I would rule out as we've got much deeper pockets than Plymouth. My instinct tells me Swansea want to keep him though and therefore he'll stay at Plymouth for the season. Will Keane is much more likely, solely due to his contractual position. He's 29 and he'll be very keen to protect his future with a longer term contract, that will be his priority now, especially with his injury record. He's in a relatively precarious position really. I expect we could match his wages at least and he would jump at a 2.5 year deal here. Plus leaving relegation fodder Wigan for title chasing Ipswich isn't that hard a sell. Although Geography might come into it. Connor Wickham isn't one for me, I'm not sure what he's going to bring to the side that we don't already have better of tbh. One I would love to see is Shayne Lavery from Blackpool. Good age, right profile, I think he would suit our system so well. Centre forward but can operate wider. That would be a statement.

Whittaker - Why would they recall him from a loan where he is doing well to loan him to us? It's fantasy land stuff. ... because no doubt we'd be paying more for him whether that's a loan or permanent deal. We'd blow Plymouth out the water, so then it would simply be down to the player if he wanted to swap Plymouth for us. It's a deal I can definitely see happening, not totally out of the realm.

Trying to think about who I'd like us to target on 09:49 - Dec 20 by TRUE_BLUE123 | Bersant Celina- If the deal can be done, I think it should be. He wants to be here, he's a match winner and can be the difference in those tight games. He did well here last season. Morgan Rogers-slightly ambitious perhaps but who knows Will Keane- would be great if possible. Classy player, can score and link play. |
We tried for Morgan Rogers last January at the very last knocking when it became apparent Bournemouth loaded their squad up with loanees for their promotion push and he wasn't going to be used. We couldn't get a deal done in time. Not sure where things stood in the summer, but again, he's someone I could see us going back for.

You think they would risk his development when he's doing well to let him come here because we would pay an extra couple of hundred k over the course of the loan? There is zero chance this happens as a standard loan. If they want to sell and it includes an obligation to buy then maybe but as a normal loan? Literally zero chance IMO. Hopefully you will be bumping this thread if a few weeks mocking me but I can't see any reason why this would happen and lots of reasons why it won't.

Everything in football is about money though, isn't it? I'm pretty certain that if we offered a better financial package than Plymouth are, whether that's a loan or permanent, then Swansea would be open to it. Whether Whitaker would want to leave Plymouth/Swansea for us is another matter though.

You talk about an extra couple of hundred thousand as though it is pocket change - if the difference is that vast of course Swansea will rather him be there

If he's highly rated and potentially going to be a good player in their first team or a saleable asset for a big fee then it seems a very short term view to take to recall him when he's doing so well. I would be very impressed if we were able to pull that off. The one X factor could be if we negotiate an 18 month loan with the last 12 months to be activated if we got promoted. Apart from that I just can't see it. I've been wrong many times before though...
