Not much to choose between the top 4 innit, going to be a close run thing. Decent point today, that’s not an easy place to go. Take it and move on to the next one.

Plymouth are relying on home form. Surely they can't keep it up all season?

Tad harsh. We are 3rd in the league for away points, so a slight exaggeration to say we are 'relying' on home form any more than saying that Ipswich are relying on away form. But to touch on that home form, the interesting thing is that we have much of all the top teams out of the way now. Only Derby and Portsmouth of what might be considered 'promotion contenders', are to come to HP. All remaining opposition are midtable/lower half. Suits us nicely to play these sticky lower sides on our grass pitch where we can get the ball down and play. Where we have struggled is playing against these lower table sides on their bobbly pitches and against the physicality of them. But back on our turf and with the away team with a more reserved approach, I anticipate quite a few more wins ahead and a quite peculiar high win % at home come the end of the season. Lots of poor teams still to come to HP (MK Dons, Burton, FGR, Cambridge, Charlton, Fleetwood etc) [Post edited 29 Dec 2022 22:19]

True that, but I don't think Cooper will leave this window somehow. Whatever the case he would go for £5mn-£10mn and so we would invest. The worry is I think with Mumba. The other loans look set to stay as far as it has seemed. It'll all come down to keeping that squad together and no injuries. Two new faces set to come in before the Bolton game on the 7th which will help.

It's January almost and they've only lost one and won the rest. You'd like to think so but they just beat a supposedly in-form Wycombe team. Won their last two games 1.0 - clean sheets have got them six points.
Plymouth keep on winning on 22:28 - Dec 29 with 3154 views | Chrisd | Quite patronising how some simply write off Plymouth. Their home form is unbelievable. We are now past the halfway stage in the league and they have a 4pt lead at the summit and don’t appear to be going anywhere, perhaps some might give them a bit of credit? As they showed against us they look a very decent L1 side and are still the best side we have faced this season. [Post edited 29 Dec 2022 22:31]

Plymouth and Wednesday over I think it was 40 odd games are in that random top 2 table - i saw it on twitter last week. They've carried on since last year. Unless they lose key players, I don't see any reason why they'd suddenly drop off.

Was thinking whoever the new Norwich manager will be might want a look at Mumba. Would have thought a Swansea side who have struggled a bit recently with being ruthless up top might fancy having an in-form Whittaker back as well but maybe not it seems. Will be an intriguing 2nd half of the season. It seems that a fair chunk of our fans (and yours it seems judging by some of the comments you see about!) expect you to fall away but I don't really see that happening, you appear to be playing too well for that to happen. Would rather you went up with us than Wednesday anyway.

We've spent high on certain areas but not on others. They've recruited well with less money.. best GK in the league, one of the hottest forwards in the leagues on loan etc. We've got some good players, but to many blow hot and cold imo, to many 6/10 performance from the likes of Burns, Chaplin, Morsy, Donacien. Our style requires so much more consistency as without it, it struggles. Boxing day we had 9-10/10 performances with a couple of 8's. Tonight, only Wolfy for ne was an 8/9 and that is the problem.

That's actually true. We are probably sort of outperforming relative to our spend. It's diffcult to pinpoint it. We've played a certain 3-5-2 type system for a few years now and it's become embedded into the way we play. Whether by fortune or something else, we have beaten all the top sides at home in quite marginal games - albeit we do actually desrve to have won a fair few of them. Maybe it's the home support as well. I'm not sure. We don't have the depth that Ipswich have and didn't spend a penny on transfer fees. But I see it as a progression from previous seasons. Last year we got 80 points and lost only Camara. We've added another dimension going forward this season and have 5 regular goalscorers (Whittaker, Ennis, Hardie, Azaz, Cosgrove). The team are very very fit and we play with lots of pace and movement. The manager gets a lot of things right and seems to affect games positively with substitutions. So it's a whole mixed bag. But continuous progress I would say is the big one (and not losing further than Camara - who by the way is a terrific player when you finally get to see him).

Which means you play all the harder games away from home where you're perhaps not so good?

This might be me with my blinkers on but these will be on nicer pitches and against the better sides (I'm thinking top 8-10 sides). I think a more open game like that will suit us better as opposed to playing the likes of Lincoln, Burton and Cambridge away, on turd pitches, where we end up looking like a real average midtable side. Of course, we will drop points and lose some games to the top sides away from home, but we'll pick up wins too. I think it'll be a normal mixed bag of away results in line with what you might expect. I don't think we'll beat all the top 8 away from home, nor will we lose all 8. We'll soon find out as it starts on Jan 7 away at Bolton.

Congratulations on opening up a 4 point gap at the top. As a matter of interest, how do you see your biggest rivals? Are you mainly worried about Wednesday and us or would you see Barnsley as much of a threat due to their form. Your form has been phenomenal for longer than ours. If you can keep it up to the end of the season then you absolutely deserve promotion. It is a big game coming up (although you could easily be well clear of us at that point). Your biggest fear must be that Schumacher might move on and who you would replace him with.

I still think 2 from the top 3. Worried that your team is coming together again and the depth that you and Wednesday have. And of course January is not far away. We'll really need to sign 3 players this window to maintain (and all on permanent transfer too as we have 5 loans). Not hugely sold on Barnsley. I don't see the goals in them or the same level of threat as with the current top 3. But who knows. Gutting for whichever one of us miss out out of the 3.

The table says they’re the best team in the division. They are. Barely anybody has given them a game at their place. Great defence, easy wins - home form is what wins titles. It is theirs to lose now, sadly, unless they lose the manager or too many players.

Hadn't realised you had a league game Jan 7th! Our struggles this season have also been with the really negative sides. Pompey tonight was similar, they were happy to just sit on the edge of their box for the whole game. Was very difficult to break through. There's lots more twists and turns to come I'm sure. It's a shame that Barnsley seem to have wormed their way back Into the mix.
