Hypothetical question 13:25 - Jan 7 with 4476 viewsringwoodblue

If you could make just one change to the rules of football, what would it be?

My idea would be: In the event of a draw, one team is awarded a bonus point based on an agreed formula from the stats of the game ie possession, shots on target, no of fouls etc. This would hopefully encourage teams to be more positive and not ‘just park the bus’ to get a draw and would reward the ‘better team’

I’m sure there are plenty of flaws in my idea but hey, it can’t be worse than VAR.

An extra point if you win by 4 goals or more. Would encourage teams that are 1-0 or 2-0 up to not "park the bus"

Electronic clock stop when the ball is out of play. Takes the added on time decision away from the referee.

God that would be awful, no offence.

VAR - officials get 3 slow motion replays from different angles. After watching those if it is not 'clear and obvious' then the decision stands as called on the field. No more drawing lines. No more being offside by the tip of your knob. Until there is real time VAR with tech that has been properly tested then they get 30 seconds and 3 replays.

A very good and simple suggestion. This really annoys me atm.

Neh. I'm a purist. Why handicap the sides with lower budgets etc (what this would do). It sounds very American and can't handle a draw.

If annoys me way more than it should. Every time I see a milimetre of the ball over the line I want to scream

It would be crap. Teams passing it around the backline even more than they do now and taking shots from 30 yards straight at the keeper. Some games would become less about goals and all about padding stats.

Should introduce a Referee's Call element similar to cricket. If its not obvious, the original decision stays.

And introduce a back chat sanction the same as they have in rugby. Start hounding the ref and he can advance the free kick 10 metres.

Football needs to learn from other sports and not think its something special.

special team. each team gets to bring on a temporary substitute for set pieces.

means we could better defend free kicks etc without having to compromise on our passing style the rest of the game!

Agree with this. Any player other than the captain talks to the ref, green card. Two green cards are a sin bin.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Point for every goal you score, on top of the 3 or 1 point earned in a match.... That would be mental, all out attack matches... And see the death of the "low block" rubbish..

For throw-ins to be actually taken where the ball went out of play. I don’t know why it winds me up so much, but almost every throw-in, the player takes about 4,5 steps forward before actually throwing it.

Why is diving seen as worse than a player deliberately taking another player out or grabbing hold of his shirt etc.

What’s wrong with a player going up to the ref and asking for clarification of a decision? Obviously as long as it’s polite.

See that they are now doing it at spot kicks. As per Rashford last night.

Main adjustment is to reduce/stop breaks in play.

1 A player must leave the pitch to receive treatment with the physio making their way to treat them while play continues. If they are unable to do so, the clock is stopped before the physio/doctor etc comes on and treatment is received. If he had been unable to get off the pitch to receive treatment, it is now a mandatory substitution. This would include the goal keeper and would increase the number of goals scored in a match!

2 A booking for any offence covered under time wasting means the offender has to leave the pitch for 2 minutes of the ball being in play. This would also include the goal keeper.

3 Dissent towards an official should result in an immediate yellow card (including if already booked) and an upgrading of the decision (reversal of free kick/up 10 yards/corner upgraded to free kick 5 yards outside the corner of the 18 yard box/etc.)
