He was one heck of a player. One of those that was actually better in the flesh than he looked on tv. Not a lot of pace, but his awareness of where he was, control, his ability to find space, to pull defenders into places they didn’t want to be and his blink and you’ll miss it finishing was up there with the best. Not the tallest, he could head a ball too as Barnsley found out. Fabulous footballer.

I saw him at Newcastle airport the day after out game there and we were on our way home. It had been St Patrick’s Day and he’d obviously been out on the town after the game , as he walked into the airport lounge sporting a batty St Patrick’s Day big green felt hat … but what struck me was how tiny he was for a striker! I thought, how the hell did he ever score goals with his head? Just shows you it’s all about reading the game and timing.
