Good summary by Stu on 11:44 - Feb 16 by SheffordBlue | Lee Grant is a UEFA A qualified coach who is currently working on his pro-licence. Those qualifications aren't given out willy-nilly and has taken him a number of years of taking coaching sessions at a high level. As a lot of late stage footballers do, he had been taking coaching sessions for a number of years before retiring. Until the game on Tuesday as a club we had the 2nd best shot conversion rate in the league and were the top scorers. Failing to score then has dropped us down to 4th but only marginally. Really not convinced that his footballing role prior to moving to coaching full time has had much to do with our issues. |
You are of course correct, I’m just picking at any little thing, which I shouldn’t

Good summary by Stu on 10:02 - Feb 16 by Guthrum | That is slightly contentious, but the team can't expect the fans to be unconditionally onside if results continue to be disappointing and performances toothless. One of the problems is, however, that people switch from love to hate, adulation to rage, with no middle ground. Symptomatic of the soap-opera-style emotional extremes of the modern world. |
A slightly philosophical point but as long as you (and I) and many others can observe the binary switch from love to hate and adulation to rage with no middle ground and don't recognise it in ourselves, it is far from universal. As soon as we stop pointing it out, it's become the norm. There are loud voices on the extremes but they're not representative and we should make sure they aren't perceived to be. Get behind the team on the pitch but ask questions about the process if it's not working. A perfectly reasonable balance and I think Stu has done a good job of it here.

I can't recall where I first heard it - but I've certainly used it in coaching when working with kids in the past - but this is psychological. As a species, we're designed for hunting so our natural instinct when shooting at a target is to aim at the moving 'animal'. In football, that's the keeper. Strikers need 'reprogramming' to aim elsewhere but within the goal (obviously). If this is true, I guess the 'ice cold' strikers have got everything in sync to make it happen. The ones off form, lacking in confidence etc. are probably trying far to hard to get everything correct and simply end up putting the ball straight down the keeper's throat. I have no evidence for this but it makes for an interesting training session and certainly gets the striker to focus on the target, not the default. [Post edited 16 Feb 2023 13:40]

It's a great article. He mentions it and I agree that despite people saying we are predictable to play against, that just isn't born out by the stats. We create plenty of chances, and have lots of shots. If we were predictable we would struggle to open teams up. We don't. Kieron does not have one way of playing, as subtle (and not so subtle) tactical changes have been apparent throughout the season when required during games. I don't think he can do much more tactically. Our main issues are these: It's fine margins, as many people have pointed out, but those fine margins are in each penalty area. Lack of ruthlessness in front of goal and poor defending under certain circumstances are killing us. They are big problems to have, but I'm not sure there is much more wrong right now. If anything, I think the players shoud just relax a bit. Everyone seems so tightly wound up and the sharp ends of the pitch.

No idea why I spend time trying to figure out what we are doing so wrong, it’s not my job, and even if I had the answer nobody would listen :) Still I was never brought into being a town fan for a good time, just a long time.

Can that really be true, that we had the 2nd best shot conversion rate in the league? Is that a ratio of goals to shots? Or a ratio of goals to shots on target? Either way, it doesn't seem to chime with a lot of the data that I have seen this season (although I stopped looking 2 or 3 games ago because it's all just become too painful!) Do you have detail on the figures you refer to? I would be genuinely interested to have a look. Not saying you're wrong, just interested.
