Trump’s pants just filled a little bit… on 22:40 - Mar 30 by Illinoisblue
A good start but a long way to go before that sack of s5it is in prison.
Oh I agree.
He’ll spin up the grift machine to full whack. Indictment fighting fund or something as stupid.
And they’ll sell his police mug shot on all kinds of stuff too.
I don’t think he’ll go to prison, but the plea deal might be to be disbarred from running for office. There are of course many more serious charges to come, but this was seen as a test for future charges.

" For all the frenzy over a possible indictment of Donald Trump in a New York hush money case, the ex-president’s gravest legal problems, which are deepening by the day, may lie elsewhere. "
I suspect as with the bloater it will be the attempts to obstruct justice that will do for Trump. Weds appearance, when the gutbucket lied on oath, saw any remaining support melt away within hours. His supposed oven ready deal was shredded as was the support for it
Trump is of a similar narcissistic make up. Someone who has lied, cheated and had dubious financial arrangements dogging him for years. And like some Ponzi scheme the lies have to cover previous lies until it all collapses, often overnight.
Unlike the UK the US has not been afraid of jailing politicians and CEO's, so I would not rule anything out. More so as like the UK it will want to drive a stake through this rotten heart, if only to show that Trump was an aberration and politics in the US is open and fair (ish).
Time to dust off the tumbril.

Watching Fox right now. If you have “political persecution” or “witch hunt” on your bingo card then you’re winning big!
He’ll be front page news all the way through to the election which feeds his narcissism, his base will shrug off the allegations and protest outside the court every day saying it’s an establishment smear and conspiracy and lord knows how long it will take just to pick a neutral jury. As for those jurors? God help them.
I can't stand Trump but this prosecution highlights an aspects of the American legal and judicial system that I find troubling, with people being appointed according to their political allegiance.
In this case the prosecutor is a Democrat which seems to me to break the principle in this country that justice should not only be done, but be seen to be done, particularly given the following from the BBC website.
"Even advocates for prosecution acknowledge that either way, this is by no means a clear-cut case. There is little precedent for such a prosecution, and past attempts to charge politicians with crossing the line between campaign finance and personal spending have ended in failure."
Quite apart from this, it just seems to fit the Trump narrative that the establishment are out to get him., so I think it will only boost his chances of winning the next Presidential election.
I might add that my concern about politicisation cuts both ways because we have had a Republican Supreme Court overturn Roe v Wade.

These aren't even the serious charges. He's got way more important ones possibly coming in Georgia. And the classified documents one as well.

Ironically, many Republican leaders would not mind too much at all if Trump were cast into a very deep and dark dungeon with no phone or internet access. But they have to defend him for fear of his fanatical cult-of-personality fans, without whose backing they are not confident of winning elections.
Then there are others who just do it in an infantile urge to "upset the right people".

How long do these thing take to be unsealed?
If only Staples was still open, they could have popped in and bought one of those silver plated letter opening knifey things, and it would all be done and dusted by now.

I dislike Trump but there is absolutely nothing in this case.
Scandal it's going to court. Would never get to Court in the UK.
Danger is that he wins and it mobilises his support and corroborates his victim rhetoric.

Thing with that is do you hold off on prosecuting powerful people because they might use it to whip up their supporters? More likely in the UK the scandal would have brought the politician down, even nowadays (c.f. Johnson).
This case is about campaign funding violations and pretty much bribery.

The other argument is that if they would have charged anyone else for doing this, not doing it for Trump is essentially just saying he's untouchable.
As far as I can tell, there are a lot of charges and outside of about one or two, we don't know what the rest relate to so it's surprising you've already decided there's nothing in it.

Friend of mine just made the very good point that the only people who will be whipped up by this are those who were going to vote for Trump whatever he did.
It may push moderates and (the crucial) floating voters further away.

I am not overly familiar with the US constitution but surely if he's convicted of some crime, then that would disbar him from running for president a second time?

Not sure on that. May only be a treason conviction or a Congressional impeachment.

If you have the cash then you can object and delay FOREVER.
It's the US legal system innit.
AHEM. It would not be allowed in a proper country like GB.
Yep. They are saying it will probably take until the end of 2024 to bring just this simple charge to trial.
You then have the optics of a Presidential candidate, potentially running (and winning) the Presidential race with the prospect of being found guilty after taking office.
So while it's true you can't prosecute a sitting President, there is currently no precedent for jailing one where the charges were brought before they took office.
The other angle, which is ridiculous but true as the constitution stands today, is if the trial was early enough and he was found guilty (and sentenced to jail), he could campaign to be President from jail, win and then take office when his sentence ended.
