So this national test of the warning thingy on everyone's phones this Sunday 10:22 - Apr 18 with 4270 viewsbluelagos

What type of thing do we think it could get used for when it's up and running?

Obvious one would be a terrorist attack - like 7/7 bombs and a warning to people to stay away from a certain area.

Or a loose gunman - like that guy who went mental in Cumbria - again, keep away.

Any other scenarios where the warning system could be useful? Not expecting any tsunamis to be heading this way tbh.

A publican has been told that just maybe, displaying golliwogs isn't really all that welcoming to black people in the local area.

We need to immediately defend his right to be a racist prick, or where will this wokism ever end?

My mate once showered through an earthquake in South America. He said he was hungover and just thought his head was spinning a bit.

Finished the shower, got dressed, left the house to discover there'd been a minor earthquake.

Did something similar in South America, woke up to see a picture on the wall bouncing around a bit and bedside lamp rocking, decided I was dreaming and went back to sleep... Or was it actually a dream?

I had it in Holland a few months ago driving towards Delft.

I’ve switched it off on my phone, so mine won’t be sounding, too many images of “scanners” going through my head to take the chance, lol.

Now, for those who like to trawl through every post made on here, I wonder when the last time a David Cronenberg film was referenced on TWTD ?

I've received one while overseas once, warning me about a 5.7 magnitude earthquake.

Was pretty interesting to read but not so helpful that I'd managed to sleep through the earthquake and alert and was reading it hours late.

I was in an earthquake once.

In the mid-90s, I was at Staffordshire University, and I was in my room in our shared house dutifully completing some uni work and the house started shaking - I assumed it was vibrations from a particularly large HGV passing.

It wasn't until a few days later I found out a series of mini-earthquakes had hit Stoke-on-Trent.

Given the eXistenZ of the Fast Company on here the likely frequency of such references gives me Shivers.

So you can. Sorry - I didn't realise you're a victim of domestic abuse.

On a more serious note, why do you want to switch it off?

Obviously any emergency warning would need to be timed right for those who have their phones on 'Do Not Disturb' from 22.30 to 10.30 ...

Connected to 4g or 5g - so if you live in a signal blackspot, you don't get the warning until you move to a place where you're connected, which may not be for 48hrs or more ... some "early warning" system that!

I believe this system overrides 'do not disturb' and phones set to silent hence the warnings to people with secrect phones due to domestic violence.

Unfortunately not much that can be done if you live in an area with no signal from any network . A warning to 95% of the population is surely better than none.

You can sign up for text warnings of flooding if you are in an area at risk. They are sent well in advance.
