Luongo 13:42 - Apr 19 with 15190 viewsTalkingBlues

I'm sensing that there's quite a few people under the impression that the reason he hasn't signed a permanent deal, is of his own choice. Sorry to break it to you, but that couldn't be further from the truth, the guy had only played 40 something games in 3 seasons prior to joining us and was released by Middlesborough as he couldn't get anywhere near the side, having trained and not been offered any terms at other clubs in the Championship, it would have been mental to offer him anything more than we did. He is getting on now (in football terms) and simply isn't mobile enough for our style of play in the Championship, where the quality and speed/fitness of player is higher than league 1, this is typified by the sort of signings we make under McK. He simply isn't mobile enough to hack it at Championship level any more, certainly not without getting injured frequently and looking miles off the pace. He and Morsy had rings run round them last night by Port Vale in the midfield in that first half, through nothing more than the oppo having faster players.

He's been brilliant for us since he came in, but make no mistake, if Evans/Camara etc were fit, he'd be nowehere near the squad even now in League 1 for us, let alone the starting XI, or match day squad in the Championship. I don't think he'll be offered terms if we get promoted, possibly might get terms if we don't, but we'll be back in for Taylor and A.N. Other for the CM role regardless, so the outlook isn't great for him either way.

That aside, he still has a massive role to play for us in the next 4 games and he is absolutely critical to our midfield currently with all the injuries we have, I hope he finds himself part of a promotion achieving side this season.

That's been the line today I'm afraid Sitters, today's TWTD theory is that he hasn't signed permanently because he was waiting to see if we got promoted before making a decision, difficult to believe, but true nonetheless.

He's already said he would like to stay.

I think that's the point TB was trying to make that town were the ones who offered 6 months. Not that Luongo only asked for 6 months to see what league we end up in.

If not. I've completed misread his OP.

Indeed, he must be loving it at the moment, which is why it's so amazing that some people think he hasn't signed permanently, because he's waiting for some better offer from somewhere, another club? Weird.

Unfortunately for him, I think his opportunities are going to be very limited here if we go up (even if we don't tbf) and it's a tough call for McK whether to reward him for his efforts when we were struggling for midfielders, after all, it was what he was signed for in the first place, so he's done his job. I certainly don't see him getting much game time when the inevitable reinforcements arrive in the summer.

Do you know that for a fact that Luongo wanted a longer deal then?

He left Sheff Wed because he wanted to play in the championship apparently, got his move there and didn't play obviously.

The club and Luongo may have come to a decision to have 6 months, get himself some games and then put himself in a position to get a Championship club here or elsewhere next season potentially.

You're right, there were quite a few suggestions that Luongo was holding out on agreeing to a permanent deal, waiting for something better to come along presumably? Very odd and was the reason for the post.

What "line"?!, and what a bizarre point to be apparently fixated on at this moment in time! Properly weird. Why does that point matter to you when he is the best or second best midfielder we have when fit, at the moment. Of course we might sign some new players in a higher division...durrrr.

Think it was actually the other way around. If Town had signed Jack Taylor, then I don't think we would have signed Luongo.

He has been brilliant since he joined us. The only reason I don't have him as the sole reason for our turn in form, is its obvious a team game and what a team with lots of standout players, especially since Jan. Massimo did free up Sam with massive knock-on results, and he energises our midfield and front line. He's intelligent and aggressive. I thought he was brilliant last night, him and Moray battle as a really tight knit unit, great understanding. Just bloody brilliant.

Auto text speaks his name as Massive.....

100% and I think we’ll still be after him in the summer (and likely get him) at which point Luongo will be surplus, I just don’t see Luongo being part of the longer term plans for McK, despite his contribution whilst we’ve been short of numbers, he was always cover.

You've done nothing wrong Frimmers, don't sweat it, somehow you've found yourself on the wrong side of others misinterpreting stuff that they don't read properly.

I think you will find that several of the current squad will be gone should we achieve Championship status. It would not surprise me to see Ladapo moved on as I don't see him as Championship class, but he's adequate for a Division One player and should he get to the 20 goal mark that's a good selling point. Sorry Freddie. We do love and appreciate you.

Yep, he'll be right up there on the list for sure, has previously been highly unsuccessful in the Championship and is clearly second best to Hirst currently in the side (save for last night, which I would imagine was mostly aimed at giving Hirst some rest in a game that wasn't expected to be as difficult as it was) and that's definitely a position we'd look to strengthen, even Hirst is still only on loan, no idea what buying options will exist there come end of the season.

"nowhere near the squad"
"had rings run round them"

Funny how differently people can see the game 😂

Also Freddie's one prior season in the Championship, when he scored 9 goals for relegation Rotherham, is not just deemed unsuccessful, it translates to "previously been highly unsuccessful in the Championship" 😂
