I'm sensing that there's quite a few people under the impression that the reason he hasn't signed a permanent deal, is of his own choice. Sorry to break it to you, but that couldn't be further from the truth, the guy had only played 40 something games in 3 seasons prior to joining us and was released by Middlesborough as he couldn't get anywhere near the side, having trained and not been offered any terms at other clubs in the Championship, it would have been mental to offer him anything more than we did. He is getting on now (in football terms) and simply isn't mobile enough for our style of play in the Championship, where the quality and speed/fitness of player is higher than league 1, this is typified by the sort of signings we make under McK. He simply isn't mobile enough to hack it at Championship level any more, certainly not without getting injured frequently and looking miles off the pace. He and Morsy had rings run round them last night by Port Vale in the midfield in that first half, through nothing more than the oppo having faster players.
He's been brilliant for us since he came in, but make no mistake, if Evans/Camara etc were fit, he'd be nowehere near the squad even now in League 1 for us, let alone the starting XI, or match day squad in the Championship. I don't think he'll be offered terms if we get promoted, possibly might get terms if we don't, but we'll be back in for Taylor and A.N. Other for the CM role regardless, so the outlook isn't great for him either way.
That aside, he still has a massive role to play for us in the next 4 games and he is absolutely critical to our midfield currently with all the injuries we have, I hope he finds himself part of a promotion achieving side this season. |  |

Never read a post that is further away from reality in my life! Luongo has excelled in every single game he has played and for my money hasn’t been lower than a 7 or 8 in any game with a few 9’s chucked in . He is one of the fittest box to box midfielders I have seen at town for many years alongside Morsey and the class he has makes him a championship player IMO as he is certainly above league 1 level , I would hope and expect that we give him a 2 year deal in the summer and I would expect him to play a good number of games for us next season whichever league we are in !

The only mention of Evans, was nothing to do with his own mobility issues, or ability etc, but simply the fact that he is clearly the preferred CM of the manager (proven by his regular selection, alongside Morsy, ahead of every other CM at the club even when the others are fit and available) which I'm reliably informed by many on this thread, is the most important thing. People quite often conjure things up on here that bear no relation whatsoever to what has actually been posted, I'm used to it now.
As I've also mentioned and you rightly concur, we will be signing other (younger, more mobile and better quality) CM's and thus Luongo will find himself out of the picture, that was the crux of the whole thing, in response to many people viewing Luongo as the future of the club and pointing out how important it was to sign him up on a 200 year permanent contract before he gets snapped up by Man City. |

Odd isn't it! Obviously it's possible we sign a key CM target or two in the summer and can't offload one or two others, thereby leaving Luongo shut out, but it's a weird choice of focus at this stage. My gut says we'd make room for him even if we did upgrade significantly in this area, given how good he's been since becoming available. Whatever happens though, the wretchedly poor analysis* displayed in this thread by said poster, both in the opening post and later comments, on Luongo, our other current CMs/players, the Port Vale game etc., is easily judged irrespective of what happens over the summer.

I am able to appreciate the great job he is doing for us currently, but at the same time also appreciate his limitations and have a realistic view on his prospects of being an integral part of the squad moving forward (hopefully in the Championship) something that very few on this thread can do it seems, too many people getting carried away, unsurprising in many respects, given it’s the best season we’ve had in a very long time. |
