Anyone else feeling somewhat ambivalent about the coronation? (n/t) on 09:08 - May 5 by Pinewoodblue | Only if you get the President you want. You would be just as anti if it was President May, or Johnson, or Truss, or Sunak. |
In many parliamentary republics (which is what we would become), the head of state (who is a figure head) is not voted for by the people, but instead by the legislature, sometimes requiring a two-thirds majority. Such a system would point to a respected elder statesman being appointed, rather in the same way as the Speaker is a relatively uncontroversial appointment.

I'd be all for a majority elected President who I personally didn't like. That would be an enormous step forward. The concept I find baffling in the UK is people's personal opinion of the monarchy. They are not there to be opined on, the very primus of them is divine reign. A King or Queen is not there to be liked or disliked, by agreeing with a monarchy you are consenting to literally any iteration of good, bad or indifferent.

Anyone else feeling somewhat ambivalent about the coronation? (n/t) on 09:53 - May 5 with 1626 views | OldFart71 | Not particularly a Royalist and at a time when many are struggling with the cost of living this ceremony is costing many million. I recently put in a claim for a broken spring on my car due to potholes. These are the things that money should be spent on. I totally agree with nurses and junior doctors striking because of pay. When this Tory government got in all they have done is cut, cut,cut and after years of Osborne's so called austerity we are probably worse off than then due to increased tax's, frozen tax allowance until 2028 and the price of everything going through the roof and to spend money on crowning a King at this time with everything that goes with it is totally over the top and unneccesary. The ceremony could have been drastically scaled back. 11,500 police and other security, putting up heads of State, painting everything and the entertainment afterwards plus the flypast.

Anyone else feeling somewhat ambivalent about the coronation? (n/t) on 01:13 - May 5 by Ryorry | I did, because of your comments “the royal commentators who will stand around saying what a great day it is for the nation and how the whole country is behind the new king, they can do one as well. They are useful idiots brought out for propaganda purposes repeating the same tired lies. The whole thing is a complete whitewash of what the public really think”. But happy to accept your later comment that you didn’t of course. |
Thank you. I think that's clear with the added context of the rest of the post that I meant it's a myth that they have anything close to 100% support. Current support is 52% according to Sky. I was certainly now implying they have anything close to zero support.

52% for 21% against 27% therefore ambivalent = couldn’t careless.

I would very much doubt support is 52%. No one I have talked to is the least bit interested. Charles now has a women who is prepared to walk a few steps behind him and let him take the limelight, whereas Diana walked in front and Charles didn't like that. Yes Diana had her problems but what do you expect when Charles was asked at their engagement "Are you in love ?" Diana said " Of course" Charles said "Whatever that is" I liked the Queen for her dedication, of that there can be no doubt. Charles want's it because of the privileges that will be bestowed on him.

No worries, I should add that it was a general point I'd have made anyway, you just happened to be the poster whose comment came closest to that particular point & which I therefore replied to.

Anyone else feeling somewhat ambivalent about the coronation? (n/t) on 13:19 - May 5 with 1510 views | unbelievablue | I hate to say it, cos I'm usually the one saying "just avoid it if it annoys you", but this has actually become hard to avoid given I live and work in London and I'm online a lot, so my ambivalence has risen a level to outright "off with their heads". Happily I'm off to France tomorrow anyway.

Being ambivalent doesn't mean you don't care, it means you have contradictory or mixed feelings about it.

Anyone else feeling somewhat ambivalent about the coronation? (n/t) on 09:25 - May 6 with 1368 views | Kievthegreat | FFS even Julia Hartley Brewer is making sense on this one.... It's by accident I'm sure as she was in favour of the new policing laws which gave police ridiculous powers against protesters, but a broken clock can be right every now and again.
