Female experience at away matches. Horrible. on 12:52 - Jun 4 by marcus1642 | I used to have a girlfriend who used to go to away matches with me in in the late 80s to mid 90s. She was a Town fan through and through but she did admit the edgeyness added an enjoyable spice to things. Typical Guardian lefty bum fest woke nonsense. Loads of of ladies used go to football back in the day and still do today. If ladies don't like it they wouldn't go. |
The state of this. Dear oh dear.
| Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness. |

Female experience at away matches. Horrible. on 17:45 - Jun 4 by Kropotkin123 | "One female supporter spoke of experiencing sexual assaults regularly when following her team and going to other games with friends." I find this comment hard to reconcile with my experience. I used to go to games with my sister, she never experienced sexual assault at games. I have also taken my wife to a few away games, and again, never had an issue at Town away games. I'm not suggesting the person is exaggerating their experience. I weary of simply extrapolating one person's experience to the majority of women or Ipswich's away support. A few things that could put me out of touch: I haven't been in 2 years, as I moved countries. When I could go, I never used club transport, as we lived outside of Ipswich. Regarding songs that game up in another post: I do take issue with the die, whore, and JF chants. I never joined in and think they shouldn't be sung. I don't caring about "i want to go home" and chants like that, so it isn't about an aversion to "banter". [Post edited 4 Jun 2023 17:48]

I imagine this woman sees sexual assault as something like unwanted touching, or cuddling, when it is just what happens at football - I don't in normal circumstances grab people around me and hug them but I do at football. If it is anything more severe than that, and happening regularly, then I have no idea how it can. Because I have been to football with plenty of girls in the past and current times, have lots of female regular football going friends and they've never mentioned to me about being sexually assaulted at football - let it alone be something that happens regularly. It's just not believable if there is any bar to clear of what 'sexual assault' is and how that compares with the vast majority of peoples views

Your post sums up the issue. You think it’s ok to hug a woman who is a complete stranger just because you’re at a football match.

I wouldn't actually do it to a woman personally, but if someone thinks that that is sexual assault then I would say that they are the issue

Very clearly you haven't walked in that person's shoes, so you are in no position whatsoever to take such a judgemental view.

I've seen men do that on more than one occasion mostly at work. Not sure whether they meant anything by it but it is cringey and gag inducing. Every woman receiving it has looked uncomfortable too. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I don’t disagree, but I still wouldn’t call it sexual assault

For generations men have hugged after a goal without knowing each other, now because women get the same treatment seeing that as ok is being part of the problem? This world is weird

Hugging strangers at football matches is part of it. I’ve hugged and kissed more fat, balding middle aged men in nylon than I’d care to admit (and sometimes some fat, balding women too). And I’m turning into a fat, balding middle aged man so I hope I’ve built up some credits for return favours . We’re sanitising the football experience. Don’t do this, don’t do that. Don’t swear, don’t have hostile chants to unsettle the oppo, don’t have a pitch invasion when you have a once in a generation high, don’t set off a flare, don’t drink too much, etc. BUT society changes and what’s acceptable changes, so we have to move with it. Ultimately, if female fans feel intimidated that’s not healthy and we should be listening. So I agree, but am offering an explanation for why people might not see an issue with it.

I'm very short on time, so in essence - It all bloody depends! None of you men know this individual woman, much less her experiences (nor do I). Maybe some men have used the traditional hug of joy (which I too have 'participated' in & been happy to do so at the POF) as an excuse to go further, touch or feel her up inappropriately. Perhaps she is a rape survivor or has PTSD. All of you men who have been so willing to assume you knew exactly what went on for this woman & judge her accordingly, are horribly out of order, the latest in a long line of men who think they have the right to pass judgement on women who they don't know. Shame on you. [Post edited 6 Jun 2023 21:39]

I had a chance cuddle with Georgie Bingham at Brentford away a few years back.
