But I imagine Bairstow would still be in the side as a batsman anyway, and rightly so. I guess he's got the gloves at the moment and until he drops an absolute clanger that is highly expensive he's going to stay there. |  |

There's q question of whether Bairstow should have come back into the side to do both jobs and there is also ignoring his form before he got injured. Ignoring that doesn't make for a better argument.
For better or worse this England side are not making reactive selections so it's not really a surprise that Foakes hasn't come in for this Test. Personally, I think Brook is fortunate to retain his place after looking totally lost but the same logic applies there. |  |

Here’s what annoys me about England, we are making the same mistakes we made 30 years ago.
Aus almost always play 5 batters an all rounder a keeper and 4 bowlers. And when we were successful last year so did we. Now we are doing the Alec Stewart thing of playing a batsman keeper who can’t really keep at the expense of a top keeper, and 3 or 4 all rounders and we’re shuffling the order and blah blah. It’s pissening in the extreme. I know Leach is out so we don’t have much else but come on. |  |

If Stokes was fully fit I think we'd have a slightly different balance to the side. As there are doubts about how many overs he can bowl we've made sure we have four fast bowlers to pick up the strain. If he could bowl for long spells I imagine one of them - probably Woakes or Robinson - would have been replaced by someone like Foakes. | |
