Oppenheimer Movie - 3hrs of my life I want back 15:40 - Aug 1 with 6836 viewsblueasfook

Bloody boring. Too political. Before seeing it, I thought it would be all about the exciting race to build the first atomic bomb, but seemed to be all over the place. Brief bits set in Los Alamos but lots of it in some enquiry room long after the war and just political nonsense. With it being boring, makes the 3hrs you're stuck watching quite unbearable.

Too much dialogue that was inaudible in my view but maybe I'm getting old.

I enjoyed it. Once you get the hang of the timelines that are running in the film it makes sense. Some of the conceptual sequences got in the way a bit but a good score and the clothing/costumes looked great.

I see David Baddiel is crying about Cillian Murphy being cast in the role as he is not sufficiently Jewish in his opinion.

Christ alive. Surely the literal name of the film was a dead give away as to what the film would be about.

Like I said, I just wanted it to be about the bomb making. All the other stuff going on just detracted from what people really wanted from the movie. The story of making the bomb. Big Boom!

I thought it was good but could easily have been half an hour to an hour shorter. Since films went digital rather than requiring actual film, the art of editing has been entirely lost. Rare to see a film under 2 hours these days and most films feel bloated to me.

Nolan shoots on film.

Edit; I don’t disagree with your main point at all btw, all these bloody films are too long now Return of the King has a lot to answer for

But I seriously doubt it was screened using reels of film (not sure any cinemas use these now), which was one of the key original reasons films needed to be edited. The length of films has got out of control over the last 20 years (coinciding with the use of digital projectors), including Oppenheimer imo, which would have been a better film for tightening up some of the exposition and cutting at least half an hour from the length.

The proper IMAX, not the fake digital one at Cineworld, screenings were shown on film, 70 miles of it shot on IMAX.

In fact people (young people not used to the days of film and when watched 10th generation copies that were worn out in the cinema) are now complaining the repeat screenings have introduced too much dust and debris in to the projector/film.

But the marketing of the film, the trailers focus purely on the build up to the trinity test, I'm not surprised people who had missed Nolan stating actually its a biopic about the man himself, felt they were watching something different to what they'd expected

I don't think its supposed to be an exciting race.

The politics really make the film. It says something about America in that time. The obsession with communism.

You get the feeling that the film doesn't really land on whether Oppenheimer was a good or bad man for helping in the development of the bomb. And that Oppenheimer himself seemed double edged on it all. Which is all understandable.

But the device would have been invented sooner or later. The issue really is whether it should have been used or not. Parallels with the development of AI today and how some AI experts are deeply uncomfortable with aiding its development. But it's back to - someone will somewhere.

So I thougt it a decent film. Thought provoking. Maybe a bit long. And really loud!!!

Interesting, didn't realise IMAX was still showing actual film as the vast majority of cinemas went digital 20 years ago. I stand by my general point though about lack of editing and films being overly long.

The film is called Oppenheimer. It is very clear, it's even at the top of the ticket when you walk in. I am quite confident most people did not see a big explosion in the trailers and think that there would be little else to the story than said explosion.

Completely agree about it should have been a six hour mini series. I loved it and felt large parts of it hugely rushed (especially the souring of the relationship between Oppenheimer and Strauss).

Having watched it I then went a read a lot of the background and there are a couple of subplots that really weren’t explored and would have really enhanced the movie. For example, it seems Groves went to huge lengths and really put his neck on the line to appoint Oppenenheimer as the head of the Manhatten Project; but very little of that was explored - and would have made Groves’ actions post-Trinity even more devastating.

But, each to their own. These are the types of movies I prefer so it was always going to be a winner for me.

He wasn’t crying about it. He raised the subject of casting directors casting in line with the minority they are casting, but rarely when it comes to Jewish characters.

We had a debate about this a while back in here.

I disagree with him on this but he does raise an important “Jews don’t count” view in his Guardian article linked in my thread. As a Jew, he sees it as another example of ajews not being defined as a minority.

I think he has a point generally about Jewish people not being seen as a minority in the same way as other minoritised groups but I think he's wide of the mark in this specific instance.

If you look at Hollywood currently and historically, has there been a lack of opportunities for people of Jewish descent that would warrant ensuring that Jewish characters are only portrayed by Jewish actors? One of the biggest studios, MGM, was founded by someone of Jewish origin, and that arose by merging two studios that were both Jewish owned. Arguably the best known and most successful director of all time, Steven Spielberg, is of Jewish descent. We had a Jewish actor, Andrew Garfield, playing Spiderman and nobody batted an eye lid whereas you can guarantee that if a Black or Asian actor had been cast to play Spiderman, I imagine a certain minority of people would have lost their heads over it.

Generally, there are loads of actors of Jewish heritage getting regular work in the film industry. The reason there have been calls for characters from other minoritised groups to be played by actors from those groups is because historically those groups have not been afforded opportunities equally. I am not sure that is the case with people of Jewish descent working in the film industry, but I'm happy to be corrected if that impression is incorrect.

That said, I think he is right that people of Jewish heritage are not always seen as being a minority in the same way as people from other minoritised groups. But each minoritised group will experience discrimination and, very occasionally, privilege in different ways in different spheres of life and whilst there should be equal intolerance of prejudice or discrimination against all minoritised groups, a one size fits all approach to tackling discrimination isn't necessarily the best approach when each minoritised group's experience of being discriminated against in different areas of life will vary considerably.

If you'd rather a mini-series, there is a 7 part multi BAFTA award winning BBC series from 1980 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oppenheimer_(TV_series)

Now on the iPlayer apparently. Take that Netflix!

Who would have thought the development of a new massively destructive weapon by the USA at the end of the 2nd WW just at the point the Cold War was starting would be political? Similarly I was surprised and disappointed that the recently shown historical epic Scott of the Antarctic was largely about polar exploration.
