I have seen this doing the rounds, is there anything in this? I know he's struggled at Southampton, but his Blackburn form was impressive having helped them to promoted and then establishment in the Championship.

His stats from last season indicate he didn’t set the world alight, but a classic YouTube compilation shows that some of his hold up and ball carrying play was very very good.
With some better decision making and finishing under pressure, he could be a player. Highly doubt we’d sign him permanently though so do we want to spend a year developing him?
With first loan spells at 18 you often only get to see a bit of what a player is ultimately capable of. 2000 minutes with a club of a decent standard like Portsmouth is pretty good going at that age really, even if the goal return isn't what you'd want.
Second loan at 19 with that bit more experience, you might see a different player.

Will Keane would definitely lack the financial upside we are looking for though, but as you say the pool of players we would deem suitable is fairly small I would imagine.
Not every player needs to come in with future resale value in mind though. Sometimes you just need a player to do a job for a couple of years and give you value that way.

There is a difference in level, but I think it's over-stated at times (more of a valley than a gulf maybe?) and I think people over-estimate the trickiness of adding to our forward line.
Hirst has struggled as a bit part player in the past. Getting into his peak years, ideally he needs 30+ starts this season to realise his potential (which we'll need if we're to get a good return on our investment). That doesn't fit easily with us picking up a big money buy like Armstrong, who we'd have to start every week.
Picking up someone to mainly do the second stint, who's good value and clearly better than Ladapo isn't easy either, for me. Upper end of the loan market is expensive (Everton quoting £1m + wages for Tom Cannon apparently) and comes with demands for playing time from parent club and player. The middle end you're looking at players like Dane Scarlett and Jay Stansfield, who have just as much to prove at this level as Freddie does.
You only have to look at the rubbish Sunderland lined up with last Sunday, Matty Godden still starting for Coventry, Middlesbrough starting Morgan Rogers up front, to see how far from a given it is that you can just go out and find a guy who's significantly better than a 10-goal Championship striker like Ladapo.
(Personally think we missed a trick not getting Will Keane, whose experience, versatility and technical ability would've really suited the role and would've been at the right price)

I think the gap is wide enough that it poses a real problem if Hirst were to suddenly be out for a couple of months. And football is now a squad game - realistically you play two strikers for a decent chunk of time in every game.
Getting the right players isn't easy of course, especially when (as you point out) other clubs are in the market too. We've seen that with Simms already this summer. We will be trying hard though and I don't see that we've gone from wanting Simms to suddenly thinking we want to go with Ladapo as our second striker.

If you build your squad around that question "what do we do if he's out for 2 months", then you're going to be spending way too much money on squad players.
What do we do if Walton/Woolfenden/Davis/Morsy/Broadhead/Chaplin are injured? Well, to be honest, we'd probably just make do with being a worse football team, because we don't have the wage bill to double up on players at that quality level and couldn't realistically manage that sort of group even if we did.
I think we'll probably get another striker, but I don't think we can kid ourselves that most players are going to look at being the junior partner in a job share with Hirst (and it's more of a 70/20 job share, than a 60/30 one, most of the time) as anything other than a squad player role.

Been our main target for months.
This the first of our 2 or 3 massive signings and breaking our transfer record?
No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Anything concrete on Edwards, Phil, or just reading between the lines after he was left out of the squad again last night?
Nothing concrete but seems likely given he was left out and Ayinde, Carr and Bradshaw were included on the bench. Clubs were interested in January, Hull among them. Have a feeling Swansea were keen as well.

I’m not so sure Hirst has been brought in as ‘first choice’ striker and any new signing would be playing a “junior role”. Objectively he’s done absolutely nothing at this level. I think he’s going to do well for us but he’s hardly your nailed on proven Championship goal scorer. We wanted Simms and Hirst so I really don’t see what’s changed on that front.

I would be surprised if another champ club comes in this time around, surely a L1 move.

Was told last week there was nothing in it.
Following on from Ashtons comments a couple of weeks ago stating we are down the line with a number of signings and would be complete fairly shortly, they are taking a while.......
