I have seen this doing the rounds, is there anything in this? I know he's struggled at Southampton, but his Blackburn form was impressive having helped them to promoted and then establishment in the Championship.

Do you expect us to bring in another striker? + 3 players like ashton said we were still looking at?
Think Ashton jumped the gun there. It was 3 weeks ago when he said those signings were well down the road. Nothing has materialised so would say they all went up in smoke.

Physicality isn't everything, but given what we've tended to look for in centre forwards, I really struggle to believe that we'd blow such a huge chunk of cash on a 5'8" striker.

Interesting. I'd assumed Hirst had come here to be the main man, and he looks very capable of being that thus far.
I'd probably see it more as wanting to have two strikers we can comfortably and interchangeably rotate 60/30 in games than having a main man and an understudy. The gulf between Hirst and Ladapo is fairly sizeable I think if you look beyond simply goals. And was evident again last night.

There is a difference in level, but I think it's over-stated at times (more of a valley than a gulf maybe?) and I think people over-estimate the trickiness of adding to our forward line.
Hirst has struggled as a bit part player in the past. Getting into his peak years, ideally he needs 30+ starts this season to realise his potential (which we'll need if we're to get a good return on our investment). That doesn't fit easily with us picking up a big money buy like Armstrong, who we'd have to start every week.
Picking up someone to mainly do the second stint, who's good value and clearly better than Ladapo isn't easy either, for me. Upper end of the loan market is expensive (Everton quoting £1m + wages for Tom Cannon apparently) and comes with demands for playing time from parent club and player. The middle end you're looking at players like Dane Scarlett and Jay Stansfield, who have just as much to prove at this level as Freddie does.
You only have to look at the rubbish Sunderland lined up with last Sunday, Matty Godden still starting for Coventry, Middlesbrough starting Morgan Rogers up front, to see how far from a given it is that you can just go out and find a guy who's significantly better than a 10-goal Championship striker like Ladapo.
(Personally think we missed a trick not getting Will Keane, whose experience, versatility and technical ability would've really suited the role and would've been at the right price)

What about rak sakyi? Is that something we are actively working on now he has been told he can leave on loan?
I know it was one which was lined up to happen later on in the window, but Omari Huthinson's signing might well have made it less likely. Having said that, if Kyle Edwards moves on, then we might look at another in that area.

Anything concrete on Edwards, Phil, or just reading between the lines after he was left out of the squad again last night?

I feel Rak-Sakyi would be class for us and the style we play so hope that this is one that we are actively looking at again if edwards was to leave.
I am assuming edwards leaving must be happening with youngsters managing to get on the bench yesterday over him

Will Keane would definitely lack the financial upside we are looking for though, but as you say the pool of players we would deem suitable is fairly small I would imagine.

Given he played, and scored for Southampton last week is it not likely he’s one that’s in their plans?
Proven at this level, I imagine the sensible plan would be for him to help them to promotion, and then sell given that he’s struggled in the Prem.
I think Hirst is brilliant, and has a high ceiling but as someone pointed out - should he get injured then we’d look a bit lightweight upfront. I like Freddie, and he’s decent backup but a significant step down in quality from where Hirst is at now.

How can we even afford an £8m purchase under FFP?
You would expect us to move people on, we're stacked with midfielders at the moment and a have a few players we could move on. I would expect players like Ladapo, Edwards, Evans, Ball, Harness, Jackson, Aluko and even Edmundson be considered options to move on to free up space for better additions under FFP. That is no dig at the players, just being realistic.

of course, with a loan player, it's all financial downsides

Far from impossible, I know we were interested in January.
His stats from last season indicate he didn’t set the world alight, but a classic YouTube compilation shows that some of his hold up and ball carrying play was very very good.
With some better decision making and finishing under pressure, he could be a player. Highly doubt we’d sign him permanently though so do we want to spend a year developing him?
