Hull in talks to sign Aston Villa's Jaden Philogene

Hull City are in talks to sign Aston Villa’s Jaden Philogene in a deal worth in the region of £5million.

The Championship club have lodged a bid for the 21-year-old who is now expected to leave Villa on a permanent deal.

Manager Unai Emery made it clear to Philogene that he wanted him to remain at the club this season and be a part of the first-team squad, but the winger is keen for consistent game time and is therefore weighing up alternative options.

Villa will not consider loaning out Philogene but are now open to letting him leave for the right fee with a buyback option included in any exit.

Philogene is into the final two years of his contract and the expectation is a decision on his future will be made in the next 48 hours.

Hull, who have won two of their first three games this season, are leading the race but there is other rival interest from fellow Championship sides Stoke City and Ipswich Town as well as from abroad.

Philogene missed Villa’s 4-0 win over Everton after picking up a knock in training.

Have to say I'm getting a wee bit twitchy now if we're missing out on deals against the likes of Hull. If we can't convince a London-born lad like Philogene to join Town and embrace our project over Hull, it's easy to see why this window has been such a hard slog.

While all these players are of high quality, the start we have made leaves me less concerned over the (possible) failure to get them signed. We seem to be in a situation of looking at extra improvements to the squad, not essential work to ensure survival.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

We aren't a big fish in this pond - we have to be smarter now in the Championship with our deals - we don't carry clout and no real financial muscle like we did in the L1.

To be honest, I would personally much rather us be run in a well efficient, smart and sustainable way anyway.

This group of players we have is a very special group, and they deserve every opportunity to continue their good work - and the start of the season has showed they are capable of the step up just fine.

Just a couple of smart signings now to bolster us out and it will have been job done, solid window.

And is Stoke are also interested, we have ZERO chance of winning that race then!

RIP Sir Bobby

"likes of Hull"

Bar one season in League One, they've been an established Championship team for years with a few seasons in the PL to boot. We're a recently promoted team who spent 4 years in the lower division after several seasons of doing next to nothing at this level.

As much as Ashton can bang the drum about what a massive club we are and how we can perceive ourselves, to the outside world (i.e. prospective players) we're still a bit of an unknown entity at this point.

It's my view that this season is a 'consolidate' season with the board looking for us to cement our place in the Championship and lay down a rep as a club on the up. Next season(assuming we're still in the Championship - no doubts on my part, btw) will see us making really SERIOUS buys.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

How long can we keep KM is the question that needs asking. We can't afford to just sit back and be happy with mid table. He will have his own ambitions as well to manage in the PL.

He's also sensible enough to know that he's got to build a reputation and hone his craft. If we're still playing Championship football end of 24/25 then I suspect he'd be vulnerable to being lured away.

Seems like this guy plays in Broadhead or Chappers position, would we really be paying £5m for a player to give depth to those positions when we already have Hutchinson and Harness? Appreciate he would be a long term investment given his age but feel there are a few other positions we would want to spend £5m on first.

Looks like the deal is close to being done for Hull anyway, probably just agent talk to try and squeeze out a few more pennies out of them.

Would depend who comes calling. Could quite easily be a club with parachute payments or even lower end Prem club come calling.

We can't afford to stand still. Ashton has already said we're not here to make the numbers up.

A top half or even playoff finish isn't 'standing still though'. It's another step on the ladder.

Looked a real talent in the PL Summer Series in the States.

They've actually recruited very well; Liam Delap, Xavier Simons, Scott Twine, Ruben Vinagre & Aaron Connolly.

Haven't spent huge money yet as largely loans, but this will obviously boost that.

Thought Aaron Connolly would have been absolutely perfect for us.

Aaron Connelly by the_toff 3 Jul 2023 23:27
Wonder if anyone will take a punt on him from Brighton. Looks almost certain to move on, undoubtedly has talent but perhaps not applied himself or looked after himself as he should have done previously. Not sure he meets McKenna’s criteria in that respect but think he could be a potentially cheap punt for someone if they can see the best of him.

Looked really exciting when he first broke through but seems to have stalled a bit.

Indeed. I've got a feeling Hull might end up being a bit of a surpirse package this season. Not saying they will finish top six, but I think they will flirt with it. I expect this time next season Rosenior might be in the conversation when discussing young and up-coming managers.

Whilst not set the world alight in his career to date, from the bits I've seen there is definately a player in Connolly and Rosenior worked with Connelly when he was under 23s manager at Brighton so will (presumably) know how to get the best out of him

Hull added twine and now adding Philogene.

A team who have started really well and want to kick on and leave no stone unturned. We need to do the same. We are in a superb position. Would be a great shame if we didn’t add more quality to this squad now. Especially as injuries will come at some point. The difference between the starters and backups in our squad is huge imo.

Twitchy? Missing out to the likes of Hull?
You didn't even know we had any link with him until a few hours ago.

And even that link could be just agent talk.

And as far as we know he’s not signed for Hull yet so may even yet sign for us.

I know little enough about the guy not to even have any idea how to pronounce his name. I can’t get upset if we don’t sign him yet!

Looks like they're also after Keinan Davis, another excellent addition you've got to say.

I had a real hunch he would end up here.

Hull have had quite a transfer window!!

A genuine question… what do Hull have that we don’t?

Both teams have young managers who want to play football the right way
Both locations are slightly ‘out of the way’ I.e. not a major city to lure someone to
Our crowds are probably 5-8k higher on average
Hull we’re a bang average team Champ last year, we were a very good L1 team
Hill have been in the Premier League a lot more recently, but they certainly aren’t considered one of the biggest clubs in the division

…. Does it all just come down to wages? The exact same as the above could be argued for a fair few teams, Stoke, Blackburn etc.

All of the above could be argues

Hull have an owner who is willing to throw loads of money about, has done it in a couple of windows I believe. Think its slightly more short term thinking than us.
