I was in line with it and I could have sworn he actually was out of the box when let go of the ball.

The foot is clearly outside the area, there's no doubt about that. Whether you can be absolutely sure that the hand was outside of the area when the ball is released, I'm slightly less sure, but he's certainly taking a risk.
