I don't even want to think about McKenna leaving us, we're all aligned, management and players, the board and the fans. He should look no further than Graham Potter as an example why he should stay and build with us. The club just have to meet his expectations which I bet are realistic because he is an intelligent guy. I am actually going to ( deliberately as I usually do it by accident ) downmark your post. BOOOOO!

He will leave us at some point, just being a realist

Not sure why LM is getting so many down votes as a potential manager if KMc was to leave today, which, of course, he won't, he'd be who I'd want for the job.

Think its probably the talk of 'when McKenna leaves' that gets the downvotes. There's been numerous threads this week of that nature. Of course there will come a time but it's pretty pointless speculating on it, nobody knows if it'll be 6 months or 6 years away, or anywhere in between.

Fair enough, I think the very speculative speculation regarding the Irish job was the trigger. Still interesting to assess who we might want should the situation change. I don't see KMc moving on for a while, incidentally, unless we get stuck in this division for a while.

He clearly loves it here and is settled, but he does have ambitions of managing a CL side, and whilst I'd dearly love it to be here, if we're honest, even if we got to the PL, it would be a miracle to get 4th.

I'm watching Newcastle quite closely, won't take a huge downturn for them to pull the trigger on Howe and whilst people might think they'll go for a tried and tested flagship manager, they also look quite forward thinking, and taking a leaf out of Arsenal's book, McKenna would fit their model very well.

Couldn't agree more.

I'd wager that on Ashton's contingency list, here's right up there, and the club seem to have a relationship given recent sales and loans to Oxford.

I'd also imagine that McKenna would put a succession plan together himself, that's how progressive he is.

Having said all that McKenna is here for a least 3 more seasons in my view.

I think he might have to achieve a bit more than he has here so far to get that sort of job but maybe a year or two down the line having got us as big challengers or promoted from this division.

I think he's a shoe in for the Brighton job when De Zerbi inevitably goes to Chelsea.

Yeah it's futile speculation as we don't know when it'll be, where we'll be at that point, and where todays potential alternatives will be.

I think we've certainly got KM here for the season. If we go up, he clearly stays. If we don't, it'll depend on the ambition of the owners and the extent to which we can invest to close the gap. It would also depend on what else is out there for KM, I can't see him leaving us for a Luton or Sheffield United, but if we're sitting in 12th and an established Premier League club (an Everton, Brighton, West Ham etc) comes sniffing then it'll be very hard for him to not look at it.

Brighton are operating in a different market than they were before they appointed Potter (similar type of candidate) though. As they did with De Zerbi, they can go and find a coach that has managed for multiple seasons in one of the top 4 leagues in world and has CL experience on their CV. Not to say they wouldn't be interested but if he went tomorrow I am dead sure there would be candidates further up their radar than KM.

We have a much higher potential ceiling than Brighton. He can achieve even more here than he could at Brighton. When McKenna eventually goes, which may not be for 10 years, we will be established in the top half of the Prem, with a ground capacity of at least 36k, full every week, and forays into Europe. Then, Kieran will be ready to go on to Man U or Spurs.

How is our ceiling higher than Brighton’s?

The ceiling you’ve described are exactly where Brighton are now.

Because we have things they don't have. We history, we have won major trophies, been champions of England. That is really worth a lot, it means you have a deeply entrenched multi-generational fan base. Don't forget, we were in Europe for 9 out of 10 years (and in the year we weren't guess what happened). How many years have Brighton been in Europe?

And then REALLY funny when we sacked him again.

We just love him so much Phil we don't even want to think about it. ( him leaving ) And as long as we keep progressing as we are and he's supported, I don't think he should leave for his own benefit either. If the worst happened and he was pinched from us, a realistic target who I think would be gettable? Well what Steve Schumacher has done and continues to do at Plymouth is very impressive. With KMc, I don't think he should be looking at an international / Irish job at this stage of his career, but get us in the prem and sustain it by establishing us for 2+seasons, well I wouldn't blame him for going if Man U came in, maybe that is his destiny. At least that would mean we would have him for the foreseeable future. More and more, I am starting to think he just maybe a little bit extra special, like Sir Bobby.

This ownership have managed to convince one of the most highly rated young coaches in world football to join us as manager when we were in mid-table in League One.

A man who was made assistant at one of the biggest clubs in the world by the best manager in the world in modern times. A man who has proven to be an absolute genius.

And yet the extent of peoples next manager ambition is the bloke from Oxford or the bloke from Preston! Lol.

Hate even talking about KMc leaving, its like tempting fate and boring. KMc was still a risk though like all managers I suppose but particularly an untried manager, but we have struck lucky and agree with you he might just be a genius / elite manager. ITFC are massive to us, but not to the world sadly so people like Ryan Lowe, Steven Shumacher, Liam Manning ( if he goes on to do well ) are young managers who, without being arrogant or disrespectful to their clubs, I would argue we're bigger and we might be able to tempt them to come here. We aren't going to get Pep Guardiola, so we would probably be best to get an up and coming manager or one of outstanding potential but ( previously ) untried like KMc. Who would you target?

Manning is a very impressive coach that could well manage in the Premier League IMO. Similar background to KM, similar ethos/principles, very emotionally intelligent. Did a very good job at MK until he had the carpet pulled out from underneath him. He evolved the side and got them playing with more punch than the vastly overrated Martin.

If he has a similar season with Oxford (which doesn't look unlikely) he's going to be on Championship clubs radars next summer.
