Clare Balding on 17:21 - Oct 6 with 2658 views | OldFart71 | Her presenting of horse racing with Willie Carson was superb. When at Ascot you also had a couple of people who commented on the Ladies attire with caustic remarks which was great. I miss them for that and dear old Julian Wilson. Much better than this channel 4 lot who gush over certain horses, make out they tipped them and whilst ladies like Leonna Mayor ( apparently pronounced Mayer) looks great and sounds awful. I don't mind Matt Chapman and Olly . I used to like McCruick who I met once at Newmarket. Sadly the Beeb gave up over a lot of their best sport. Now you get Wimbledon blanket coverage BBC1 & 2 for two weeks solid which is a pain in the aspidista.

I don't follow racing much these days, but on the few occasions I have in recent years, Francesca Cumani has been absolutely outstanding for ITV Racing. Superb presenter, knows her stuff 100% (no surprise, given the family she grew up in) and has offered a whole new dimension of insight with her informative paddock-picking - almost matching the even more brilliant Ken Pitterson in this respect (tho I think he only guests occasionally - he used to work for the Will Hill TV/radio team). Agree with you re Julian Wilson, also a classy professional in his day.

Gabby Logan always been class. Balding is very good, a too pro...but I do find her exceptionally irritating. The hair....it's just so distracting. Like I respected Colin Montgomery's golf...but again...such poor hair.

I will get misplaced grief for saying so, but I think she is over praised because people are desperate to tell everyone how fair and decent they are. She's fine, but I don't find her especially engaging or charismatic.

Not from me. It would be a sad world if everyone thought the same, and a dangerous one if people felt they had to think the same.

With a father and uncle such as hers it is only to be expected that she knows a bit about horse racing.

Don't think there is anything wrong with having that opinion. As I say I find her a bit irritating. What she is though is incredibly professional and knowledgeable in some stuff she specialises in (and where she does t specialise you can tell she's done her homework). Rarely ever makes a mistake in delivery. But I also don't find her nearly as engaging as say Gabby Logan or even Lineker (who was dreadful when he started but he got his groove and is a good presenter). Sue Barker was much better as well.

Likewise, don't think there's anything wrong with either Redrickstuhaart's opinion -or your own here - your middle para is particularly true I'd say - she's thoroughly professional. For me, Balding has achieved popularity not because she's brilliant at any one thing (though obviously top of her game in horseracing) but because she's so versatile - she can and does cover a huge range of presenting & commentating roles, from several sports to a radio docu series on walking in the countryside, via Crufts on C4 etc etc. Broadcasters employ her because she's reliable, and has a knack with people, who warm to her genuine interest in whatever it is they're passionate about - so she's able to put them at ease & draw them out in interviews.

She's come a long way with experience.... I remember her best, for when she took the Mickey out of a Jockey's teeth, live on air, interviewing him straight after winning The National, I think.... "You can buy yourself some new teeth now", she said. There was an awkward pause as the poor lad didn't have a clue what she was on about... Proper Partridge moment from CB..

Don't know whether you were aware but Francesca's Dad Luca I believe brought FrankieDettori over to Britain and Frankie's father Giannfraco Dettori rode for Luca Cumani as well.
