Highest Finishes of Teams Not to Play in English Football's Top Flight
Another football quiz if anybody would like to have a go. There are seven minutes to try and get the 20 answers.
Thirty teams have finished in the top 12 (these days the top half) of the second tier without ever playing in the First Division/Premier League. Ten of these clubs no longer exist and are greyed out. The season(s) in which each team achieved their highest finish are shown, ranging from 1892–93 to 2006–07.
A couple of the answers are teams currently in the Championship, and another seven have played under the "Championship" name - most of the 20 have played in the second tier since 1992. Also, the image below is helpful in getting one of the answers if you recognise who he is!

I'm thinking the trick is to think geographically, rather than alphabetically? I started doing that and got 4 in the last minute.
The least guessed one, currently on 1%, I actually thought of, but thought its 2nd to 4th letters were 'ant' (with the fifth letter in the actual answer missing). Annoying, dat. [Post edited 9 Oct 2023 21:49]

Could be argued that Town took on Southend at their highpoint, and having beaten them, started their long descent. | |

on New Year's day in 1992, Southend Utd demolished Newcastle 4-0 in a rather unusual lunchtime kick off, briefly putting the Shrimpers top of the 2nd tier. After 3 more good results, their form then collapsed & they lost 10 of their last 16 matches, including the memorable 1-2 loss at home to Champion chasing Town & they finished the season in 12th place, still their highest ever League placing. | |
